Reading some of the threads on SDN makes me so angry sometimes. Why are premeds so susceptible to superiority complexes? Why does it always have to be "I'm better than you"? Here's the stuff I've noticed:

Nontraditional applicants think they're better than traditional applicants AND the other way around

MD applicants think they're better than DO applicants (even when they're not in anywhere!)

Non-URM applicants think they're better, somehow, than URM applicants

This makes me scared for the future of our profession. I don't look forward to working with a bunch of arrogant people who think they're better than everyone else. Remember, it's a privilege to go to med school and while it's an amazing and great accomplishment it shouldn't give anyone the right to disparage someone else.

Let's just all be nice.

yah...let's work together and destroy Agent Smith!!! END OF THE WARS!!! YAHHH:clap:

In my interviews and interactions with med students, they all seemed very nice, level headed and humble. Med schools are probably pretty good at picking out the right people. Of course there are always a couple of bad eggs, but overall, I'm confident that I will enjoy my future colleagues' company very much!

interview...interview... you can't really tell who is good or bad in interviews.... 😉 everyone suits up and acts all nice and stuff -_-

future doctors: 1. smart ppl 2. good liars (either/or/and)

Those clever b@stards; I've been had. 😉 I'm sure they've all read Machiavelli's "The Prince," too!

Seriously, I've worked with some med students outside of the interview setting and had similar positive experiences.

those are the type 1. (only type 1) ppl then 🙂

Dara is making sense. Very few people here are logical when making arguments. There are facts that are proven and those cannot be disputed...i.e. URM have an easier time getting in, numbers wise only. You cannot prove that an URM or white guy is going to better physician, however.

That being said, no one is in any position to judge the compentancy of another person based on how they fit into certain criteria. If you know someone, fine, but otherwise, how can you say whom is better than whom based on a few statements they make online?

Also, you cannot quantify what makes a good doctor. You cannot judge who is going to be a better doctor, simply because the defintion of "good" varies. Some people value research, others value clinical stuff. Some people with great grades can be good doctors and some can be bad. A gunner could be an excellent physician or a terrible one. Someone who's sole objective is to make money could be better at medicine than the most compassionate doctors out there. You never know.

I for one don't value EC's at all because I feel that all it takes is the time to do them. I feel most people are just padding thier resumes. I think a person with a 4.0 and a 38 is way more impressive than someone with a 3.7 and 32 and a million great EC's. The 8 interviews I have had thus far agree... am I wrong? Who cares? Its just my bloody opinion. WHo is going to be a better doctor? I don't know, depends on the person and what my defintion of a better doctor is.

People here are so obsessed with self agrandizement and it is pathetic. THIS IS AN INTERNET FORUM FOR MEDICAL SCHOOL ADMISSION. If you want to brag, brag to someone who can see your face and gives a damn.

This forum is about medical school admission...it would be best if we kept it that way. I just want to know when people interview, what were their stats, and when they got in.

If it's any consolation, I was worried about starting med school because I know how obnoxious pre-meds are and I was worried I would love medicine and hate doctors. While my class has a couple of duds in it, overwhelmingly it's made up of astonishingly diverse, exceptionally cool people. No one thinks they're better than anyone else, and no one's even interested in who out-scored whom. Even from the beginning, when we go out socially, we don't talk about school, because we have other dimensions.

This is why I have to disagree with you, judoka, on your opinion of ECs. True, anyone can do them, but not everyone does them, and you will need outside interests and a personality to work effectively with patients. You are right, however, that having lots of ECs will not fully compensate for low grades or MCATs, as you have to prove that you can manage your time.

I think there is a little bit of a change when you get into med school. You know you will still have to compete for residencies and fellowships, but everyone in your class managed the same feat you did, getting into your school, so you're on more or less equal footing. It's so exciting to be learning about medicine that the other stuff just drops off, in my experience.
