Hey All,

I am considering writing a letter of intent to my top choice school and was wondering if the following line is ok to include to show my intent

"I would like to emphasize my intent to attend the University X if accepted from the waitlist"

Thanks!

If you don't put something like that in, don't bother to send it.

I put: "If accepted by X, I will withdraw immediately from all of the schools that have accepted or waitlisted me, and matriculate at X."

Got in a week later. Coincidence? Maybe, but I'll never know. Glad I wrote the letter!!

Same here, but I didn't have acceptances at other schools 🙂 I'd word it more like the previous post: that's how I did mine.

There's no way of knowing if it affected the final decision or not, but in my opinion it can only help.

If you really want to go there, then include I will attend if offered admission. However, I'd advise against saying I will withdraw my other acceptances or anything related. Withdrawing from other schools is implied if you state intention to attend if accepted but mentioning other acceptances in the letter might rub them the wrong way as some kind of ploy.

I just think it shows them you have other choices but have "chosen" them, if they accept you.

Otherwise, might sound desperate.

How long should a letter of intent be? Just a sentence or two, or like a full page? Also, do you just mail it to the admissions office of the school you're interested in?

Very short and to the point, I think. Depends if you have already written other letters explaining why this is the perfect school for you and you are the perfect student for them. I had already done that, so my "intent email" was about 3 sentences.

Make your "intent" statement in the first line and re-state it in the concluding lines if you have a longer letter. But I don't see any reason not to use the LOI to explain why this is an ideal school. If they are pulling your file up for re-review, this LOI is in there, and it is one of your few venues for adding your voice to your app after it has been submitted!
