Hey all!

I recently completed a one week omfs externship and shadowed the chief residents and the chair/program director everyday. I also assisted a lot in the surgeries. I was wondering how common it is to ask for a reference letter after an externship? Is that even something students could do? I have received a lot of positive feedback from the chair and the residents so that's why I think i could get a good letter.

Thanks!!

I don't see an issue with that, especially if you do not have a home program

I think that’s fine. It seems like you have, but just make sure you anticipate a good letter. My chair would certainly write a letter for an extern, but it would be a brutally honest letter - for good or bad.

The way you should ask such a question is:

"Do you know me well enough to write me a positive letter of recommendation for _______."

OMSDoc is spot on.

I did 9 weeks of externship and worked extremely hard, especially on one of them that was for four weeks. I asked the chair for a letter. He wrote a strong one that was mentioned more than once on the trail. You will already have a good idea if the residents like you. If they like you it’s a good sign.

I recommend doing one externship for a longer duration than just one week for the residents and attendings to get a good idea about your commitment and work ethic etc.
