When applying for ortho is it absolutely necessary to have an orthodontist write one of the letters of recommendation? Are there any ortho residents that got in without a letter from and orthodontist?

Thanks

all three of my letters were from dental school faculty. (one was my research mentor, one student research group advisor I worked with, one was a pedo professor I got along well with)

I think that unless you worked for the orthodontist and they know you really well and can write a great letter and add something significant to your application I would avoid a private practice guy.

That being said, if your orthodontist is an alumus of a particular school that you are interested in and is friends or adjunct with the program director, then I'd have them write a letter just to that particular program.

If I had to do it over again, I would have done research in the ortho dept with a well known faculty member and busted my butt so that he could write me a great letter.

Nope. I had a research mentor, pedo instructor, and clinic supervisor. Good enough to land me 15+ interviews. Don't worry about it....

I don't think it matters, as long as they are positive letters. I wouldn't sweat the letters too much. None of my interviewers asked anything about them. I doubt they read them closely unless it's signed by someone they know or is well-known, ie big name in ortho.

doesn't matter one bit. just ask people who know you well and love you 🙂

if you have a big name in orthodontics recommendation letter will it make a big difference ?

Nope, it will hurt you 🙂
Of course it would help but the most important thing is that it is from someone that knows you well. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, your personal accomplishments should be what carry you.
