i'm apply for class of 2017 and i wanted to know when should i ask for a LOR and what information i should give them and what information i should get from them?

I applied this past cycle. By this time last year, I had started contacting my potential LORs and giving them a head's up that I would be asking for a letter. Make sure that you maintain contact with them. Pick people who know you fairly well - for example, you would want to pick the prof who gave you a B or C but you saw a lot during office hours over the prof who never met you but have you an A. I actually officially asked for letters the first week of June, because I knew the application would open soon. That way I was able to give them about a week's head start. I sent them all my resume and unofficial transcript. The only thing I asked from them was for them to let me know that they submitted it, even though PharmCAS lets you know as well. Hope that answered your question! Good luck!!

When you get a LOR are they looking for professors? Pharmacists? Or a combination of both? (I'm looking at a few pharm schools and they aren't very specific) Sometimes they say you need 2 or 3 LORs.

Its best to call the schools themselves for more accurate info on LORs as the info on PharmCAS school pages arent entirely accurate. Temple's page on PharmCAS says an LOR from a med-assist is REQUIRED, but I called them and they said only two LORs from Professors, like most of my friends did.

Seems like if the pharmacy school lists what they want on their own website, it's pretty accurate. But I agree, I don't know that I'd pin myself down to the PharmCAS information.

I think it is never too early to start asking if you feel that you would like their LOR. I applied during this current cycle using PharmCAS but I notified my first LOR almost 2 years prior because I knew I wanted them as one of my LOR. Sometimes it is wise to wait too. My others were instructors and heads of their department that I had several courses with so by that time they knew my motivations pretty well as a student. As for info, PharmCAS will have and electronic LOR(eLOR) sent out the people you choose and they will fill out the information requested in the eLOR. When I was going through the eLOR stuff I sent emails out to all the people I wanted as LOR's with an attachement of an essay describing my motivations on why I wanted to pursue a PharmD. I also mentioned qualities that I felt were strong in myself that would lend to the profession. Good Luck!

To add on, I would also send in your personal statement (or a draft) to paint a more well-rounded picture of you as an applicant. And make sure you give them the deadlines! 😛
