Letter Requirements

Hi,

How strict are the letter requirements for schools? I was wondering because Penn State requires a minimum of 4 letters but I only have 3 currently. If I were to apply with only 3 letters, would it be an automatic rejection?

As a rule of thumb, I would not apply to any schools where you don't meet the minimum requirements. They have to narrow down applicants somehow, and an excellent first way of doing so would be eliminating those who don't fulfill requirements.

On a somewhat related note, how do schools handle committe letters? I know a lot of them I've read say something to the effect of "x number of letters or a letter from the prehealth committee." Does a committee letter trump these requirements? As my committee letter consists of 5 evaluators but I only have 2 uploads to amcas.
