i've been told that MD only letters are recommended, but i've published several papers/abstracts with a PhD only ophtho researcher. so should 1 of my 3 letters be from this PhD research mentor? any opinions would be appreciated 🙂

ps. i know everyone says get them from who knows you best...but i didn't know if that applies to letter writers who are PhD vs MD.

I think having that PhD letter will certainly help since you will also have 2 other letters from MD’s. The application process is not an “all or none” process. You have to generate an application that will set you apart and having a GREAT letter from a researcher is a good way to do it. The PhD might not be able to comment on your clinical skills but can certainly comment on your work ethic. Plus you clinical ophthalmology skills prior to residency are mediocre at best and programs know that.
