For radiology I've heard a lot about letters including: many from radiologists, none from radiologists. 1 from medicine, 1 from surgery, 1 from rads. etc etc etc.

So I realize there is no magic formula but what is your experience/knowledge about letters from docs that know you well that aren't in specialties that are strongly related to radiology such as plastics or psychiatry attendings?

A strong psych letter from a no name junior faculty beats a luke-warm radiology letter from the president of the RSNA, every day of the week...

Is a radiology letter of recommendation even required?

Or just strongly, strongly suggested?

It depends on the program. Some do, some don't, but almost all require 3 letters with no more than 1 from radiology faculty.

Most programs don't allow more than one radiology LOR?
