Since I am starting to gather my potential letter of recommendations I have a question. If they ask, how long should a letter of recommendation be?

I've been able to see the length of the letters that have been written for me when interviewers have pages through my file in front of me. It looks like most were 1-2 pages single-spaces. I think a good response to your writer's question, though, would be "as long as you need to communicate everything you want to about me."

Just make sure they don't write about the following no matter how much they may mean it as praise:

1) He can drink a horse under the table
2) As long as it has one boob he'll go after it
3) You should see the trick he does with the cadaver
4) Never entrust your children to him
