Letters to notify schools you will not be attending

I've noticed several people mentioning sending letters to the schools they are declining. What are people doing for this? Are you writing a formal letter? Would a brief, but polite email be sufficient?

I've noticed several people mentioning sending letters to the schools they are declining. What are people doing for this? Are you writing a formal letter? Would a brief, but polite email be sufficient?

Some of the schools have a form you fill out online. For the others, I just emailed the admissions coordinator with a short note essentially saying I was flattered by their offer but decided to go with another program.

If you were in contact with the program director or had any considerable contact with a potential faculty advisor, you may want to notify them as well.
