I am between jobs right now (not practicing)

I had a DEA number which I never used (I'm a pathologist, I don't prescribe anything that requires a DEA, or anything at all, really) but my previous employer wanted me to have one anyway. But it came up for renewal and I let it lapse. Does anyone know if there are problems with doing this? Will it be a problem to get it again or will the Feds show up at my door and demand an explanation (in the middle of the night with flashlights...just kidding)

Also, I got tail coverage for my malpractice, but as of today am not covered...I wouldn't think I need it since I'm not practicing, but a friend said it makes it harder and more expensive to get it again if I have an "uncovered" time period. The problem is, I don't have money for all this stuff right now. I'm keeping up my state licenses but that's it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.
