Hi All

I've been lurking around these forums for about a month and I finally decided to join seeing how helpful everyone is.

In short, I'm just finsihed my third year as a Biochem undergrad and in the midst of it Pharmacy school has really struck me as a serious path after I graduate. I took a practice PCAT and was surprised about the level of math in the quantitative section. My question is will I be seeing calculus in Pharm school (aside from maybe P-Chem), and how math intensive is the profession? I'm required to take up to Calc II for my major but it's by far least favorite and perhaps weakest subject.

Thanks in advance!

In retail we don't use any math beyond what our big novelty size calculator can handle. From what I've heard Calc is just a pre-req, you'll never use it again.

you will need to be very proficient in algebra and understanding calculus can help you in kinetics. Outside of retail, they use math on a daily basis. To get through school it has a surprising amount of math. Do not discredit it.

I know, I don't like math that much either. I have a friend in her second year of pharm school. She's not that great with math and she says the math isn't too hard/bad at all. :xf:

ratio's will be your best friend. kinetics can get a little more difficult but for the most part you get the equations so it's just plug and chug

I'm also pursuing my degree in biochemistry. are you sure you have to take calculus 2? i only have to take calculus 1 and general statistics to finish my math. I think I might have needed to take a computer class too and it feel under math for some reason.

This question will probably be answered at the pharmacy forum better. Anyways, i dont think you will need calculus in pharm school. I think it is gonna be easier and totally different

In pharmacy school, you will need a strong grip on basic algebra and ratios. As for calculus, you need to understand the concepts, but I've yet to have to use derivatives and integrals in a class. In kinetics, we use a lot of equations and have to re-arrange them sometimes, but that's about it.

Best answer - You have to own algebra... If you were only passable in Calc, you will do just fine in pharmacy school.

I agree. We've had to integrate/derive equations for some pharmsci classes but calc isn't really the focus. Overall, I would say that a strong background in math can only help you. Better to be over prepared than under prepared and have to struggle while you've got a million other things going on.
