I am clinical psychology phd student who is not currently applying for internship or post docs but I recently came across lgbt health focused internships/post doc opportunities and am wondering how many opportunities like this are out there?! I'm a first year student and this is my area of focus. It is really exciting to see these positions growing!

These are two that I have found. Anyone else know of any similar positions?

Northwestern:

Boston VA:

Hopefully more VAs in the near future, as it is now possible to actually openly provide services to LGB people there (still some issues with providing to trans people at VAs).

Lots of centers also have less formal tracks in LGBT work. I'd post to the APAGS listserve (when you are closer to internship) and ask about people who know of internship programs that might have emphases that aren't always clear from the APPIC posting material.

Edith Nourse VA in Boston has an LGBTQ post doc as well. This is definitely the hot new training experience that is getting funding. I anticipate more sites in the next few years. I believe the Northwestern internship is the first (maybe only) LGBTQ-Health accredited internship.

Also, its very likely that if a VA post doc has an LGBTQ track a trainee would be able to do a minor through their internship as well.

Conveniently, this just got posted to the Div. 44 listserve:

Hi Division 44,

Many of you have probably heard of the 7 VA sites offering postdoctoral fellowships in LGBT Health Care. These programs started this year (2013-2014) based on the leadership of Jillian Shipherd and Michael Kauth and their work as LGBT Program Coordinators for Patient Care Services within the Department of Veterans Affairs. Jillian, Michael, and many others across the country have worked hard at making sure the VA health care system is a safe and competent provider of services for all veterans, including the many LGBTQ veterans and service members who seek care at the VA.

There are 7 sites this first year including VAs in Boston, Bedford, West Haven, Milwaukee, Houston, San Francisco, and Honolulu. The 2014-2015 year will include two additional VA sites--San Diego & Chicago. Each LGBT Health Care fellowship involves direct clinical care of LGBTQ veterans, but variations in other duties exist (e.g., San Francisco's program emphasizes staff education and consultation within the medical center broadly, not just the mental health service). To find out more about these programs please visit the VA psychology training website and click on each of the locations listed above for further information:

Because I am the inaugural fellow at the San Francisco VAMC, I am attaching our announcement for fellowships to this email. If you have any questions about the Interprofessional LGBT Health Care fellowship or others, please do not hesitate to contact me. Our deadline for applications is December 2nd. If you are interested in other LGBT Health Care fellowships at the other sites, I'd be happy to put you in contact with the fellows currently holding that role. Please feel free to forward this message to others who may be interested.

Best wishes,

Kile

Wow! Thanks for all you responses! These sound great!

Resurrecting this threat to see if anyone has any info on current internship sites that have an emphasis on working with LGBT (especially T) populations. Of course I've search APPIC etc., but I've noticed that some of the more prominent sites haven't shown up on searches there so I figured there might be more missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A friend started it in 2015 (one-year post-doc, clinically-focused), but I'm not sure if or how long it was around before then.

Oh, yeah, now I remember. They didn't have one as of 2011-ish. I believe that they got some funds for it when the VA did a big push in the 2012-14ish years.

I’ve seen university counseling centers sometimes offer this as an area of emphasis in their internships.

Thanks! I've seen Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, New Mexico State, University of Florida, and UNC say that they have an LGBTQ area of emphasis. Is anyone aware of any others?
