Hi

Medical student here looking at specialties-- what is the malpractice situation is psych-- is the liability high, or low? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's among the lowest of all specialites.

Around 4-5k/year in the NYC area starting, according to a pamphlet I recently received from a company.

Because we don't do major procedures, and because we spend LOTS of time talking to our patients. (You're more likely to get sued if you're not a good communicator.)

It's not to say we don't ever get sued--suicide and homicide are the biggies--but it's not the major part of the landscape it is for OB/GYN and surgical specialities.

Do the low malpractive rates in psych in general mean that the state by state practice environments (e.g. Florida and Pennsylvania being notorious physician unfriendly environments) differ less for psychiatrists?

I like the explanation from nip/tuck. Suing a shrink is like suing someone for a spell that didn't work. 😀
