Which liability insurance is better? I've always heard of TRUST but now I'm seeing things about American Professional Agency. I'm a postdoc so still trying to figure things out. Please advise.

You can always call both and ask each for a quote.

If you are single, and have no assets, you can really cheap out on liability insurance your first year. What is someone going to sue you for? Half of a used Camry and some textbooks? Either way you go, add the max coverage for board violations. It's super cheap.

APA switched from endorsing the Trust to endorsing the American Professional Agency after some high-level political shenanigans between Trust and APA. You can read about it here. American Professional Agency is also endorsed by the psychiatrist APA (ApA?). I have Trust and it's been fine (I also haven't ever needed to use my liability coverage)--it's fairly cheap and the renewal process is stupid easy.

100% this. I have the Trust and cost has been reasonable. Honestly, they make it really easy to renew, which is worth $ to me because I'm not wasting time going back and forth. Years ago I had dinner with the head of the Trust, and they were really helpful. At the time a group of us were curious about if and how they were going to offer liability coverage for psych RxP. I never finished my RxP licensure, so it became a moot point, but the overall positive experience has kept me with the Trust since I started.

I have always used American Professional Agency (even before APA partnership). No problems with them and they have also been fairly easy to deal with whenever I have contacted them. Honestly, you can't really go wrong with either of them.

I use both agencies and both are good although the Trust is a bit more..uh.."polished". Nicer letterhead and all. Never had a claim thank God, so I cannot speak to that experience.

Buy the maximum amount of Board violation coverage every renewal. It is cheap and VERY important to have.
