I was wondering about how to get liability insurance if I take a year off after I graduate. Is it possible to be covered if you want to do an international rotation or spend a month doing some clinical work somewhere?

I asked a friend who works in insurance and he said it would be pretty tough, or very expensive. What do new MD's do after they get their degree but choose to work internationally or in some other situation in the year in between graduation and residency? It sounds like it might not be possible, and the search for threads did not reap much info.

Anyone else ever look into this and have much success?

It will depend on where you´re working. I took a year off and worked in a hospital in Guatemala. We weren´t required to have any liability insurance because medical malpractice isn´t really an issue there. (there´s plenty of medical malpractice but doctors don´t get sued for it....at least not yet). So figure out where you want to go and then ask whoever is in charge.
