Hey Everyone, does it really matter what type of degree you get? Do Med School's prefer the traditional Chem or Bio bachelors? I want to know because I got back into a school I was dismissed from under the liberal studies program and I want to know if that is a problem?

This shouldn't be a problem. Actually, you can argue that med schools actually prefer students who don't have a biology degree in particular. Because there are so many bio majors who apply to medical school, they have a slightly tougher road to hoe. Also, humanities majors tend to do better on the verbal section of the MCAT than science majors. Moral of this story? Major in what you like and just make sure you take care of all your pre-reqs for medical school and you will be fine.

Your undergraduate major does NOT matter for getting into medical school. Your undergraduate performance in your major DOES matter tremendously. You can major in anything that you like (and can do very well in) as long as you take the pre-med courses - General Chemistry with lab, General Biology with lab, Organic Chemistry with lab and General Physics with lab.

If you were previously dismissed from an academic program, the nature of your dismissal will be examined and evaluated within the context of your entire application. Somethings are more problematic than others but in any event, whatever you ultimately decide to study is your decision but you need to do very well. The average undergraduate GPA for students matriculating into medical school is 3.6 and the average MCAT is 30. Aim for those numbers and do your best.

Thanks, my current GPA is a 2.5 for my AA but I will be quiting my job and resuming full time to school next semester. I am positive focusing completely on school the next two years will pick up the GPA.

Many med students have liberal arts degrees; I'm one of them. 🙂 It's not a problem at all. Major in whatever you want, and do well in whatever you decide to study.
