Prior to starting residency I know we have to be licensed by our state medical licensing board but do we also have to be licensed by a state or national anesthesiology licensing board? And does this still apply if we are doing a prelim/transitional 1st year?
Thanks!

The only license required is by the state medical board. And applies for prelim/transitional. I hope that helps,

I did not have a license during prelim year. Had a limited license during residency. Check with your program first.

As a resident, all you need is a limited license. However, certain programs like mine encourage residents to apply for their full license before they can do moonlighting shifts. The full license is much more of a pain, requiring plenty of paperwork, which may or may not get screwed up by your internship people as they're filling out the forms for you. Once you're done with internship, I'd recommend you jump on getting the full license so you have less headaches in the end. (that said, if you're leaving the state after your residency, you'll end up jumping through all these hoops once again for your new practice).

There are some states that do not require residents to have any sort of license.

Regardless, your license has nothing to do with whether you are a prelim/transitional/intern/resident/anesthesia/surgery/pedsetc. The only thing that matters is that you are in a GME program.
