Happy quarantine everyone,

I had a quick question about licensure by credentials that I could not find the answer to online. I am currently a D4 planning to take ADEX whenever the coronavirus situation calms down. This coming summer I am attending a 3-year orthodontic residency in NY. I am aware that NY no longer requires NERB/ADEX but rather at least one year in a dental residency.

That being the case, as per licensure by credentials, if I was to work 5 years in NY after my residency does that mean I could receive my dental license in other states without having to take a clinical board exam? Could not find a clear cut answer anywhere else online.

Appreciate all help with this! Thanks and stay safe!

No. You will most likely be required to take some sort of exam. Only a few states will honor a PGY-1 license even after 5 years. Best to take ADEX now so you can move around if you need to.

I plan on taking the exam, but want to know my options otherwise. Where could I find a list/somewhere that specifies which states would honor the PGY-1 license. Because as I search dental board websites, and even the chart posted above, it makes no such mention. Just says that you need a license from another state.

The chart posted above is the closest you’ll get to a consolidated list. Otherwise you have to search each state. But if you are taking ADEX, not much to worry about. It is accepted in like 47+ states.
