I'm not sure if I want real feedback or just some cheering to keep going 🙁

I don't have the best NBDE scores : I had 88 (I) and 82 (II), I have a TOEFL score of 277 (CBT), my GPA in school was 3.37/4.00 , 5 years of clinical experience (back home) and almost a year now in teaching (Dental & Medical Assisting, here in the US)

The question is : "What are my chances?" I'm in the process of applying to the following schools : UCLA, UCSF, Pacific, Loma Linda, Tufts, Boston, Pittsburgh, Michigan, Nova Southeastern, Temple, and Colorado. I don't think I will be applying to any other schools except maybe U of Penn. it's a very stressful process, gathering all the documents from the old school through friends and relatives, writing stupid essays, and requesting ECE reports, NBDE scores, and TOEFL scores, gush it's like a never-ending story. and I don't wanna do it again next year. Do you think I could enroll in any of these schools with what I have so far? Please say yes 😀

Yes! 😀

Thank you ! I knew I can make it ! 😛
Now for real, what do you guys think? 🙄

I think you have the whole package, decent grades, good toefl, good gpa, good experience. Being also teacher here in the US is a big plus. So when they see that in your CV it will be considered.... having said that, start sending applications in the mail.

Good luck and may the floss be with you!

Decent grades really struck me, I beleive you were referring to my NBDE scores, you described everything else as good except those, I agree too, I think they are the worst thing in this equation in my case, I pray God they wont kill my chances, I really hope other aspects of my application be considered too 😳

Thanks for the comments

hi Kilani..

dont worry, you have very good chances. Esp schools where they take your experience in the dental field into account. Start submitting your applications! Good luck!

Im curious to know about your job as a teacher for dental assistants. Did u have to go through any exam? Or did you just have to show your NBDE scores and GPA report? I wonder how many states allow foreign graduates to teach??

For the CA schools it also depends on how good your handskill of Operative and FP dentistry. You worked as a dentist for 5 years so handskill should be fine. For CA that can compensate for the Decent board scores.

I applied to an opening for a Dental Assisting Instructor position in a school that specializes in Health Auxilliary education, and it was actually a good deal for the school, they were looking for a DA to teach, and they got a dentist instead. It happened while I was struggling to find a temporary DA position (being a male didn't really help!), this arrangment is much better, and the pay is relatively better compared to DA, but still not the best, especially that wages in this part of the country are notoriously low. No I didn't need any exams or certifications.

hey if you dont mind my asking....what state are you in. I'm in st louis and am having such a tough time finding a DA job.....what's your visa status.... i have called so many places but everyone declines politely....can you tell me how u managed to get such an awesome job...thanks

WELL CHANCES ARE THAT U WILL GET THRU LOOKIN AT THE FACT THATUHAVE TAKEN BOTH PART 1 AND PART 2 ALSO U HAVE A DECENT GP AND I GUESS UR WORK EXPERIENCE AND WORKING PRESENTLY IN US WILL INFLUENCE WHOLE SCENARIO..THESE PPL DONTHAVE A SET CRITERIA JUST PRAY AND RATHER THAN GATHER THINGS GATHER BLESSINGS..THEY WORK WONDERS..U DID UR BEST AND I AM SURE ULL GET THRU..GOOD LUCK 😛

Hi,

I'm in St.Louis County, I'm also having problem here getting DA job... I guess Missouri Law doesn't permit DA to work without a cert.....

Hi ..
I think you will have better chances in California Schools to get the interview call, I know few people got in to these schools except Lomalinda with you scores. Coming to East Coast I think you got good chances in NYU,Probably Upenn & UPitt.
Temple is not offering any advanced Standing program since last year...
Colorodo there is no chance for this year...they finished there interview process.
Try Buffallo,UDM etc..they are space based ......you can always try your luck...

Think about the positives you have... I think you will definitely get admission with your profile...

I live in Virginia Beach, VA and I'm a permanent resident. I understand the difficulties with finding DA positions, and I also know that one of the big disadvantages for foreign dentists when applying to these positions is the "over-qualification" issue, not too many dentists will want to hire dentists as DAs. You can always search locally for schools that have DA programs and send letters of interest even if they don't have current vacancies for instructors, state your qualifications and certifications ..etc, and that you are available, you never know. Good luck ! 😀

Thanks for the feedback, especially on Temple, I didn't realize that, I don't know why I had them on my list. The problem with most NY schools if not all of them and UDM is the horrible threeeeeeeeeeeeee years! that's why I'm gonna take my chances only with the 2-y ones, I hope I wont regret this later on 😳

By the way does anybody know how much weight do admission committees usually give to the essay part of applications?

It's nice to finally get the chance to have afew moments of relaxation and reflect on the past few months, boy that was a lot of stress 😱 no certainty, no security, lots of thinking. I'm so glad it's all over.

I also wanted to thank everybody for everything; sharing information, encouraging, and showing this wonderful comradship and help.

10000000000000000000000 thanks ! 😀

I think you should apply to NYU. You have a pretty good chance there, but it's a 3 year program. Also you can read the acceptance thread and see which schools accepted people with nbde lower than 90 this year so that you don't worry.
