Hello,

I am 36 years old & I started college in 2004 with a major in business. In the spring of 2006 I was able to take one final - got an A, then my mother almost died, she is okay today, and I was unable to take 3 finals and received W's and F's in the courses. My GPA before this was a 3.49. I spent 4 months helping my father take care of her and due to my financial situation was not able to return to school until last september 2009. I have repeated the courses and received A's.

1. In the time frame from when I left school and came back I started my own business to make ends meet and it was extremely successful however I was not gratified, money does not equal happiness, I decided to sell it in order to come back to school and complete my bachelor's degree. I switched from business to biology as a major due to a new found love for biology coupled with helping my mother I decided to pursue medicine. I am a fan of osteopathic principles and I am not considering a MD. Will the time break hurt my chances for acceptance into a DO school?

2. Also here is a chronological order of what I have done with my life since I was 18, since I did not go directly into college, I put this in as I see many older pre-meds were in professional careers such as engineers & MBA's, does my non-professional resume suggest a disadvantage even though I held leadership roles in these fields?

18-23 years old: Manager of a retail store
23-30 years old: Flight Attendant/Purser
30-33 years old: Full time student / working
33-35 years old: Owner of my own business
35 - present: Full time student

3. Current Status: Junior
Current cGPA: 3.50
Science GPA : 3.67
ER volunteer
DO shadowing
Hospice volunteer
Speak a foreign language

4. Since I started last fall 2009:
Fall 2009:
Biology I : B+
Chemistry: B-, repeat A
Pre-Calculus: B-
Other: B-

Spring 2010:
Biology II: A
Chem II: B+
Calculus: A
Writing: A

I put these last two semesters in here as I had trouble with Chemistry in the Fall of 09 and devoted too much time. However my grades improved significantly once I got into the swing of things again.

If anyone has had a similar situation or can shed some light regarding the W's & F's and a three years break afterwards I would appreciate it.

Insight on my resume relating to invite/acceptance chances would be great too.

Thanks

I read in one of the threads that there are some people in D.O over 50.
I guess your resume looks to be that of a fighter. Your GPA is good for D.O. Now you target to make 27+ in MCAT and apply as soon as you can in the next cycle. You still have one more year to apply.

THIS is something that would be good to post in this forum on many threads.

Great job on chasing your dream and working very hard at it. Age is only a number, and you are just as deserving as anyone else. Keep up the good GPA and score well on the MCAT. Best of luck to you!
