Damn...

This hits home hard. I've been a fan of this dude since he was in high school. To lose his life at 41... I'm lost for words. RIP.

I know this has nothing to do with pharmacy but thought I'd share it since with all the complaining we do about our jobs and lives, you just never know when it will end. Tragedies like these put life in perspective. Even with so much fame and fortune, this man is gone just like that.

I'm thankful i'm alive and that i get to do what I love and enjoy on daily basis. Life is fragile y'all. I know this sounds silly and corny but let's complain less, do everything in our power to fix the problems we face and live our lives to the fullest. You just never know when it will all be taken from you.

So tragic that his 13 year old daughter died too. His youngest child is an infant.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kobe wrote his basketball HOF speech years ago, or like Richard Jefferson put it "when he was 9 years old." They should have Shaq read it.

Absolute tragedy. Imagine what the parents felt when they knew they couldn't do anything to save their children.

this one hits home way more than it should considering I have never met the guy. Maybe because we graduated HS the same year, I was a huge lakers fan, and I watched him win all of those championships, he sorta felt like someone I knew. Anytime people your age or younger die, it always is a reality check - and unfortunately I see quite often at work - just shows we need to re-evaulate how we are living our life at times- title of thread is well put.

This was so profoundly sad in so many ways. It hurt reading every detail that came out...and I hated the Lakers growing up.

I remember seeing him and his fam at church sometimes, but I’d keep my distance. I hope his family, and those of the rest who were on board find peace.

As a general rule....stay off of helo's (the single engine medivac types are extra bad) and out of light twin airplanes....

Life can be very short and often, it can be meaningless. Due to natural section, we have been preprogrammed to thrive for materialistic things and to criticize those who do not follow the same path. Things have evolved. We no longer struggle to feed ourselves but yet we are still stuck in a rat race.

I feel the same way, Being a basketball fan, Kobe was just everywhere I looked. I wore his shoes, tried to emulate his moves, watch all of his highlights. Mind you, this was back when youtube was still at its infancy. I was in 9th grade when he first got drafted in 1996. Bought almost every pair of shoes he endorsed. Debated endlessly about who's better between him and Jordan. We were looking for "the one" after Jordan had retired and he took that mantle and never looked back. His weirdness, his charisma, his drive made him such a character to love and hate.

He was just one of those people that I'd thought I get to see for awhile... like Tom Cruise... it's just weird and unbelievable that he's gone.

The S76B was a twin engine and it was probably safer than schlepping down the 405/101 to TO.

Sooooo...that leaves the weather and? It's EASY to screw up in an air machine...distractions...tired.....one pilot?...probably never see the report...wonder if it had a recorder......(my rule still stands..just about anything is safer than driving)

These celebrity grief threads are cringey as heck.

If the closest you've come to facing your mortality is a basketball player biting the dust, you need to go outside more

Sadly, "live your life" is not great advice for the younger generations inhering $23 trillion in debt, a student debt crisis, job automation, corporate consolidation and cost-cutting, a broken political system and massive wealth inequality between workers and investors. More like "just try to live."

But yes, a very sad story. My condolences to all the families. Life is precious and it is always good to remind yourself of how fortunate you are the be living this miracle

Why would you think things would be easier? After WWII, Europe and Asia were destroyed. We had a 50 years head start.

Things have evolved. We no longer struggle to feed ourselves but yet we are still stuck in a rat race.

The rat race is to pay for apartments to live close to your work, cars to transport you to work, eat so you can have energy to work, medical bills and insurance that will bankrupt you if you use any services.

In 100 years we'll all be dead and none of what we did will have really mattered at all. Also, everyone you know and love will be dead, too. Kobe's death means nothing. He was going to die anyway.

Enjoy Arby's.

Heard of that thing called kids? Raise them well and they and future generations will represent you.

And imagine if that line could be used on a bad misfill “he was gonna dies anyways” - lol. Dunno how that would hold up in court.

They will die, too. Within 3 generations, 99.99% of humans are forgotten. Including any and all influence you may have had on them. Humans at some point will become extinct. Existence is meaningless. You are meaningless.

Enjoy Arby's.

Youre right. What makes you think that anyone cares what you think then? Why does it even matter to you what I think? Why even bother to make a comment?

Clearly, you do care.

What I said was meaningful enough for you to comment. How ironic. Cognitive dissonance much?

Of course nobody cares what I think. I will also be dead and soon forgotten. As will you. And everyone in this thread.

Riiight. So that was my point. Thanks for reiterating that. We will all die soon. It is my opinion that we should live our lives to the fullest before we die. To you, clearly life is meaningless. I get it. Even though you think its meaningful enough to go to work and make money lol. You care so much that you come to these forums and state your meaningless thoughts and tell people how meaningless their lives are lol ok. I get you. Well, even though you may think your life is meaningless, God who sits above the firmament still loves you. I pray that you meet him one day. After you lived your life to the fullest. Godspeed.

The only god is the vast meaningless of a pointless existence.

The thing I keep coming back to is that Kobe is now dead and Magic Johnson is still alive. When Magic announced he was HIV+ in 1991, I don't believe anyone reasonably thought he would still be alive in two years time (I certainly didn't); it has been 29 years and he is still going strong.

Modern medicine can be an amazing thing, and we should all be grateful for that.

I think the most underrated aspect of his life that my fellow Southern Californians can relate to is that he made LA, a clusterfracas of small/large neighborhoods, actually seem like a cohesive city from time to time.

I mean, he lived in Newport and spent a lot of time in OC, but my friends in Eagle Rock, Los Feliz, Atwater Village, etc... felt a lot less isolated with him playing for the franchise.

Kind of hard to explain if you didn’t live in/around LA.

I heard he was treated like a demi-god in LA. Apparently, he had to start riding helicopters to even get to the arena on time.

I heard on the radio this morning, "it would be like if we lost Tom Brady".

Flying is common for those with the means... he wanted to spend more time with his family in Newport after games. When my gf lived at UCLA and I lived in Newport, it routinely took me 90mins to get to Westwood in rush on the 405.

He was nice, very private. I’d catch him at church or at our campus gym from time to time. I stayed away, I also wasn’t a laker fan, hah.

Here’s a quote from the Times that sums it up for most of us that understand this aspect:

LAT said:
The NBA star's death struck Westlake Village resident Chad Martinson as doubly cruel. The 35-year-old father of two brought his 5-year-old daughter, Tatum, to the memorial, which he acknowledged was emotional.
“His death as a father hits me harder than him as a player,” Martinson said. "The second I heard it was Kobe in the helicopter, I knew where he was going, and the first thing that popped into my head was, I was hoping the girls wouldn’t be in the helicopter.
“It was devastating to hear that his daughter was with him.”

Top 10? Most consider him GOAT now. Can you name 9 QBs better than him?

It's really freaking weird how people judge QBs. So Brady was on a team that won a bunch of Super Bowls. Ok. It's a team sport. QB is the most important position, but it's also the most overrated position. People act like Tom Brady single-handedly won 6 SBs. But if you look at any other position, nobody really cares about SB wins. Barry Sanders was on a terrible team, came nowhere close to a SB win, and is still easily considered a top 5 RB all-time.

But for Brady, like I said, easily top 10. But for me he's not even the best of his generation. I'd take Brees and Manning in their prime over him in his prime. I'd also take Marino and Favre in their prime, too. Plop any of those QBs on a Belichick led Patriots team and they don't miss a beat.

This is off topic and has little to do with pharmacy. Mods, I'm respectfully asking for this thread to be closed and locked as OP's post could be considered off topic or even spam (advertising for the LA LAkers) by many.

Although I admit I am in the camp that doesn’t understand celebrity culture. Look his death is a tragedy as is his daughters but why is his death worth any extra attention? People die everyday.

Sorry to sound extra harsh though, please carry on.

You a celtics fan? Lol i am not advertising anything. Im a MFFL.

Hope this isn't insensitive to talk about, but do you guys think Kobe's all time ranking will be higher because of this? Celebrity deaths tend to elevate their greatness (for example Heath Ledger probably wouldn't have won Best Actor if he didn't pass).

This Bleacher Report recently ranked him number 14 all time which I agree with. But I wouldn't be surprised if they put him in the top ten for their next list.

I had him around 12-13 all time until LeBron James surpassed him.

That's a good question. I think for me he was a unifier for people all across the US. Kind of like a famous actor/singer.

He accomplished something big so he "deserves" more attention than us. Not necessarily my personal opinion, but just trying to explain the situation. The media isn't always rational.

This is such a futile debate haha There is no way to rank these players. That being said, MJ is the goat. Lol

Not a sports fan, don't understand celebrity culture to a large extent, but everyone needs a hero. At least Kobe gets to die from a reason that's not his fault and dies in his prime to have never known decline.

These responses though say something more about who you are than your grief on what your values are. Besides winning, I am somewhat astonished at how many of you value community and dangerous living when you've structured your lives away from those values. Might a change be in order?

Yeah you can tell who has kids and who doesn't here. He just had a newborn a few months ago, I can't imagine what his family is going through.

Yikes! This one could hurt......and strikes me as pretty accurate...
