Hey everyone!

Here is a list of my science courses and my grades...
Gen Chem I B
Gen Phys I A
Gen Chem II B
Gen Phys II B
Themes in Bio B+
Orgo I B Humanity
Natural world B
Biology of Euk Cell B
What are my chances of getting into dental school? Should I even bother putting time and $ into trying to get in?
My overall GPA is ~3.46

Grade wise you should be alright. Your GPA is slightly below average - average for some schools. There is a lot more to an application though.

The overall GPA is fine.... The sGPA is "okay".... I imagine between 3.2-3.3?

To be more competitive, you just need to buck up and start landing more As in the higher end bio courses (or any science course for that matter)

You def need to get higher grades in upper level science classes to show their is an upward trend 🙂

Oooh I see,
Thanks that gives me hope and motivation to do well 🙂
Will they take into account my major?
I'm a biomedical engineering major... and they don't know this but I've taken 20-22 credits every semester since freshman year.
It's difficult for me to focus on just one class and do extremely well, you know? I mean I've had some pretty good semesters.. but you can see my science classes didn't go as planned. Usually I'm trying to not fail my engineering classes. (So far I haven't gotten a C range or lower yet) =]

Okay thanks a lot for your input!

what 😱
20-22 credits per semester??? for freshman? who college allowed that... you need like special permission when you go beyond 20

Your major won't make a difference. Whats important is your grades, and not necessarily the major.

during my freshmen year there were a lot of engineering students in my class taking about 18 -21 credits. that inspired me to take 21 credits in the spring sem. of my freshmen year.

needless to say that sem. i only got 12 credits 🙁 and dropped the rest.

yeah to op. keep in mind that if your school does not have that A- B- grades. You GPA will be actually LOWER than what you have for ever B+ b/c b+ will be 3.3 according to aadsas same goes for C+ keep that in mind when u calc your gpa.

Yeah.. Clearly my major wasn't the best choice! But I really enjoy BME and the people I've met along the way. Freshman year I took Calc A, Physics I, and Gen Chem I, Fund. of Engin. Design, and Impact of Globalization (Easy class)... I wish dental schools would understand that I tried my best.... :''( I guess this just means I have to show them that I can do well in sciences through my DAT scores. So here I go...!

or you can lower down your credits per term and start landing more A's

But then I won't be able to graduate on time and finish all my prereqs lol.
Some people take summer classes which would be awesome if I had the $ but I have to work at the dentist during the summer.

It is what it is. I could've tried harder though..
I already know I am taking a year off. So I still have my last year in college to do better.

But are you looking to finish undergrad by end of junior year? Cause 20+ credits per semester = 40 per year.

40X3 = 120 credits, theres your undergrad degree.

The decision is yours to make, but know this, strong GPA performance (especially in the sciences) is a very valuable piece.... don't jepordize it for the sakes of early graduation.

what people are trying to say is. IF you rush you waste more time trying to make up for the mistakes that you could avoid early. for ex. low gpa you would conisder post bac, masters etc... why do all that when you can do it correctly by taking your time and handling 75% of your course load while getting excellent grades instead of mediocre.

I'm not really sure why people do this. What you should know...Getting good grades is the single most important aspect at this point. If you don't have the money for the classes, take out loans. This will turn out better for you in the long run, and it'll make up for itself. For example... Say you get OKAY grades, and don't get into dental school..Now you just wasted $2000 on application fees, and a year of time (time is money, ~100k). Or, you can take a lighter load, and possibly get good enough grades to get in the first try with no doubt in your mind. In addition, if you have high grades, many dental schools reward their hardworking students with a small scholarship. e.g, temple gives out 10k to their top 40ish incoming students, uop, case, penn; they all give scholarships. The chances of getting any sort of funding like this is actually very high if you have decent grades (although normally its only 5-10k, but still). These are just aspects that you need to think about in addition to the possibility of not getting in and having to spend a lot of money on more schooling. Think ahead, and be smart.

There we go. Problem solved. Just put in a little more effort and bring your grades up.

Hey sorry for the confusion but I am not trying to graduate early! Lol

My major requires me to take a certain number of required courses to graduate. Just because I have enough credits doesn't mean I can graduate early. I need to finish my core classes and requirements.

I meant I am taking a year off after I graduate from undergrad

Yeah. That's how a lot of majors are. Just make sure you take your courses and do well. You said you could work harder, so do it. The schools will look kindly on you working harder and having a positive trend in your grades, while taking difficult courses.
