Hello,

I'm interested in neurology as a specialty, but I'm wondering what the lifestyle is like. What are the average work hours for a neurologist in private practice/ hospital?

I've looked it up, but I'm getting various answers. Some sources say 40 hours a week, and some say 60-80. Is there really that much variation?

Also, how are the hours during a neurology residency?

It depends, and is highly variable.

I worked 80-100 hours a week for at least the first year of neurology residency. Other residencies work less.

I'm sure you can find part time work in a neurology private practice if you're willing to look far and wide. The more you work, however, the more you can make (to a degree), and so there is wide variation in practice hours as well.

Is it easy to work 40-55 hours a week and still make upwards of 200,000 by mid-career?

Is it easy? NO. Is it possible? Yes. How much you work and how much you make depends on many different factors; academic/practice, employee/practice owner, outpatient/inpatient practice, what testing modalities you do.

Depends?? I have seen both ends. As others have said, there are so many factors to consider.

If you work at a small community hospital where there is an admitting medicine team and you rarely ever have to go in when called and the bulk of your business is outpatient, that can be a nice lifestlye; however, you certainly won't make boat loads of cash (but still be making six figures and certainly won't starve).

If you are the lone neurointerventionalist at a large medical center or university based hospital, you may never sleep again!!

Definitely will put in the hours during residency. Let's face it, resideny is residency.
