hi! i know its long but please help out! :scared:

so im currently an undergrad student at pursuing a double major in human biology and something else that i havent decided yet.

i'm in my first year. i was terrified about going to university, although i was a 90's student in high school. i took a few friends' advice and took a lighter course load during the fall/winter semesters to help me make the transition from high school to uni, and am planning to do a summer session to complete my ten half courses for my first year.

my first semester has just finished.

normally, at my university, 5 half courses as taken during fall semester and another 5 during the winter semester. i have done 4 courses for each, and am going to do 2 in the summer.

im leaning towards either dentistry or med school.

i have just found out that some professional schools dont accept you unless youve had a full course load throughout all of your undergrad.

fyi - i am not planning on taking a lighter course load during any other year - i might do summer school for some other courses - but i will still be taking on a full course load during the sept - april school year most probably from now on.

i have also found out that many grad schools look down on a lighter course load, although you are allowed to have done so, so you can still apply.

my question is, will this by any chance ruin my chances at all? i am planning on working really hard this coming semester, as well as during the summer, and hopefully doing really well on my courses.

this past semester hasnt been too great, but everythings 70's (B's) and above - no C's yet, so im happy lol.

also, should i take 6 courses this semester - thereby giving me a full course load for this year? but im too worried that will have a really bad impact on my gpa.

another thing is that UofT's med school takes out 8 of your lowest course marks if you have a lighter course load, and i'll be missing out on this if i apply there, and other medical schools prefer a full course load as well 🙁

but, they do not count courses when youre a part time student into the gpa, so since im only taking two in the summer, those marks wont be counted into the gpa.

so, in this case, wont most people take their harder courses in the summer so the lower marks wont impact their gpa? isnt that essentially the same affect as removing 8 of your lowest marks? on the website it says that courses taken as a part time student will count as prerequisites and to the completion of your degree - just not your gpa.

oh, and please mainly med schools in ontario, although I'd like some info on one's outside of ontario and even canada cause I want to apply there too just in case!

what is everyones opinion on all this? how should i go about nay of this? any help is greatly appreciated, as i only have a few days to make my decision. 😕

thank you so much, good luck for the rest of the year 🙂

"Academic rigor" (whatever that means) is something that most medical schools consider when evaluating applicants. I'm sure that one component of that is the number of hours you take since more hours is generally more rigorous.

That said, as long as you're a full-time student (usually 12+ hours for most universities) you'll be fine. As long as you do well, no one's going to care whether you did 13 hours or 18 hours per semester. If you're double-majoring, however, you might have to take on larger course loads simply to graduate in four years (if that's your goal). If your second major is in an unrelated field, then you can almost certainly count on taking a large load of courses. This isn't something you should really worry about in the big scheme of things.

This is my opinion with respect to US med schools. I have no idea how Canadian schools work.

Why a double major? Why are you leaning towards "either dentistry or med school"?
