Hi All,

So my friend is a sophomore in college and deciding whether or not to take Orgo II. I know a decent amount of schools (MD & DO) do not require it and will substitute biochem, but how limited will their school options be without it? Most schools still say required but has anyone called admissions to determine if it can be substituted?

Just curious how many people have gotten into different medical schools without Orgo II.

Thanks!

I got in without taking it. More than a few schools have criteria such as "take X amount of chemistry hours" or will specifically state biochem can be substituted, such as KCU. I'm not sure exactly how many schools strictly require it or which ones don't, but it's not a deal breaker at any of the schools to which I applied.

KCUCOM requires Org Chem (5 credit) + BioChem (3 credit) (plus congrats).
This post got me started, because I'm debating whether to take Org Chem 2 next year. I can, but I'm more tempted to take BioChem (for dat MCAT).
I'm gonna compile all the school's OrgChem requirement based on ACCOMAS 2017 CIB.

Nice, thanks for taking the time to do that! I should qualify my earlier statement, I guess. I took org 1 before I took a two year hiatus to attend paramedic school, then took general organic when I came back, and then repeated org 1. So I technically had 9 hours of organic, I believe. It would probably be more practical to take org 1 + 2, but there are classes at most universities that count as organic chemistry that lie outside of organic 1 and 2. But taking org 1 and 2 would be the easiest, most straightforward way to get your 8 credits!

KCU doesn't require O Chem II. They require 13 chemistry hours so O Chem I with two gen chems=12 just need one more chem credit hour!

I think "your friend" would be better served if he/she just posted the question him/herself.

I remember looking at UNECOM and I believe they are okay with 4 credits Orgo and 4 credits Biochem, I think? lol

To edit this post a little out of curiosity, if you do not take orgo 2 but have 2 semesters of biochem with associated labs does that look better?

This is inaccurate or outdated. PCOM and Touro-NY don't require Orgo II. They allow biochem to replace it. Just checked. Don't know about the other schools.

Orgo 2 is a fascinating class that people interested in the sciences should take regardless. Not taking it is shooting yourself in the foot
