I was interested in doing ophthalmology, but I've recently been worried(after reading some of these postings) that the scope of ophthalmology will be more and more limited due to optometrists. It appears that optometrists are constantly trying to do more and more with their title. What do you guys have to say? Is ophthalmology a dying field?

The encroachment of optometrists into the field of MEDICINE, specifically, ophthalmology, is not a novel phenomenon. Optometrists have been trying to get prescription and surgical priveleges for many years, but wise minds have prevailed. While they may continue to gain small victories in the future, ophthalmologists remain active in educating lawmakers as to the level of optometry education. Optometrists have their place in eye care, and can compliment an ophthalmology practice quite well doing refractions, etc. If the past is any indication of what the future holds, however, don't look for optometrists to be doing cataract surgery anytime soon. Knock on wood.
