Does linking from a post-bacc program decrease the likelihood a school will offer you scholarship money? After all, once you are accepted you can't say no...

It's very rare to get scholarships from med schools anyways. Any difference would be <<<< an extra year of earnings anyways.

Plus many people doing Post Baccs are trying to fix deficiencies in their applications. Not the common merit money recipient.

Well programs with linkage are usually for high stat career changers. I mean it's not impossible, I'm at my state school on a full ride after doing my postbac at Scripps. It's just not common to do it at any of the schools you'd link to.

Drizzt. Your point is well-taken, but let me note that I am already at a post-bacc program and may have the opportunity to link after deferring for a year bc i'll be studying abroad. So the income differential argument doesn't really apply for me.

Does anyone know how many merit scholarships are given out amongst an incoming crop of med students? From this thread it sounds exceedingly rare.

I could see them being given quite rarely at a public school, but private schools (esp. the big rich ones) have to throw their money around somewhere, right?

it's going to be hard and extremely competitive to get a merit scolarship at either public or private schools. I can give you an idea of what it takes if it helps... I applied with 3.7/39, from top 5 ug and top postbac, MBA from Penn,
2 years research experience with 3 pubs... The ug people getting scholarships mostly had 4.0s with high 30s mcats, rhodes, marshalls, or at least fullbrights or goldwaters, and/or urm status. Like I said, it's not very common.

drizzt, sounds like you had some strong qualifications applying - and you were successful in obtaining a scholarship. What state school system are you in? California?

I had dual residency, ca and wi. I'm currently attending Uw. Ca is too broke to give scholarships to anyone.

In a word, yes. Scholarship money is rare in med school, and often it is offered to try to entice you away from other schools that have also offered you acceptance.

That said, your post-bacc program will be the best resource to answer this question. Your director will know if given schools have a history of offering scholarships to graduates from your program, and what sort of stats might make you eligible for those scholarships.
