After taking biochem, i should know this...but where/how does lipid synthesis occur?

yep it is in the smooth endoplastmic reticiulum. heh you don't need biochem for that... more like intro bio 1.

This gets me confused, too. My biochem book explicitly says that fatty acid synthesis happens in the cytosol. Lipids for the membrane, however, are synthesized in the Smooth ER.

i think this happens because when vesicles are created by the Golgi and they go to the membrane and empty their contents, they can become part of the membrane. just a guess...
