This is my first time applying. I would really like to go MD, but I'm having a hard time with my list. Please be honest and realistic with your responses. Any advice appreciated! Here is a rough summary of my stats:

  • Year in school: Just graduated undergrad, will be working full time as EMT and continuing lab work during gap year
  • Country/state of residence: NY (not URM)
  • Cumulative GPA: 3.63
  • Science GPA: 3.54
  • MCAT Scores: 511 (126/127/130/128)
  • Research – No publications, 600 hours over 6 months in lab during sophomore year, 8 week paid lab position during summer before senior year, current lab position anticipated 850 hours through next year, attended research conference in Bethesda where I met director of NIH
  • Volunteering (clinical) – 135 hours in hospital neurology and cardiac ICU, 2 medical mission trips, president of organization for medical mission trip for 4 years (more of a leadership/educational experience; I do not endorse voluntourism)
  • Physician shadowing – 75 hours pediatric neurosurgery (4 surgeons shadowed)
  • Non-clinical volunteering – 50 hours soup kitchen
  • Misc ECs – high level orchestra experience first two years of college, performed at Carnegie hall, senior editor for school's medical publication journal
  • Employment history: Worked in school bookstore for three and a half years (20hrs/week), worked as server for 6 months (weekends only)
  • Immediate family members in medicine? No
  • Specialty of interest: Neurosurgery
  • Other information: Had to withdraw from Orgo II first time, A- upon repeat
  • Schools to which you are applying: Please help!!!
