What is the point of this thread? Are we dissing these programs or saying, "Hey, here are some spots that may open up soon."?

Kinda wonderin' the same thing.

I'm certainly not dissing any of the programs I listed; I ran out of time and money for interviews. I assumed it was for the latter purpose.

i never thought of it as dissing on programs either, it helps those of us that have not heard from programs or were waitlisted, maybe some of those spots will open for us!

I doubt anyone is dissing Cincinnati, Pitt, or Carolinas (or anywhere else) - some would say those are the best programs in the country.
But if the location isn't right and you have found something you like already there is no reason to go.

I started the thread so wait-listed applicant people will know where the spots are open..so they can make a phone call or whatnot.

Exactly. Although I don't have a ton of cancellations, I'm not dissing any of those programs. In fact, I really wanted to interview at Wash U and Michigan but it just didn't make sense.

For everyone cancelling interviews, I understand the whole money and time factor. But what I really want to know is, why did you apply to these programs if ultimately not interested in checking them out?

Also related, how many programs did you apply to? How many interveiw offers did you get? And then ultimately, how many interviews did you attend?

Your interest in attending interviews is relative to what other interview offers you receive... I applied to way more EM programs than I wanted to interview at because I wanted to keep my options open. What would have happened if I didn't apply to enough programs and then only got 5 interviews (run the risk of not being happy or not matching)... also I wasn't sure if I definitely wanted 3 vs 4 years or commmunity hospital vs. academic center so I had to apply to enough in both areas in case I changed my mind. Fortunately, I have sorted most of this out within interviewing at the first couple programs, and now I am able to cancel programs.

ditto what waterski said - you don't want to undershoot your apps and get stuck... and if you don't have 1 type of program in mind or 1 small geographic area well - that leaves a lot of places to consider! you can't predict where you will and won't get offers.

I applied to ~35 because at the time I wasn't entirely sure what kind of program I wanted - county vs. higher payer mix, 3 vs 4, etc. Plus I wasn't sure where I wanted to live exactly. Traveling for interviews has been a big help. So far, after about 5 interviews, I already feel that i'm getting a better idea of what i'm looking for in a program/location. Of course, it is always better to over-shoot then under-shoot.

This is how this thread can be very helpful!!!

Just remember most people drop interviews because they are not interested in the location. It usually has nothing to do with the program. People apply to programs all over the country, and if they do well, they start narrowing down based on program reputation but mostly location.
