I was curious how expensive the most expensive medical schools in the country are per year. Seeing that I want to be an FP, I had to be realistic about what would be feasible 5-10 years from now when paying back, so finances were of some consideration in deciding where to matriculate.
EDIT: I've added a column for total cost of attendance, see next page.

That is the University of Colorado's OUT OF STATE tuition. In-state is much more reasonable (under $20,000, I think). The sky-high out of state tuition is intended to discourage out-of-staters from applying there. Not saying I agree with it, but that's the rationale.

Also, out of staters at UColorado qualify for in state tuition after one year I think. So the total cost of going to UCol is close to the same as any other out of state public school.

yup. but the difference may lie in how easy it is for you to claim instate residency after your first year. Some schools (colorado might be one of them) allow you claim residency after one year by just going to school there one year with little hassle. For example, UMDNJ even lets you claim instate tuition your first year if you switch your driver's license and such to NJ before classes start. I've heard on the second hand (from a old co worker who goes on UNC med now) that Chapel Hill are sticklers about residency claims as far as tuition goes.

NOT 45K for tuition, but probably closer to 45 for TOTAL COST OF ATTENDANCE. There tuition and fees altogether are about 34-35K, and you factor in the dirt cheap cost of living in St Louis and you get a number somwhere in this ballpark.

One thing to consider on top of tuition numbers is cost of living when looking at these numbers. Does the school have affordable student housing? is it located in an area with a high cost of living?

I can see how the cost of attendance would be useful. However, bear in mind that people can spend on average anywhere from $5000 - $15 000 a year in living expenses, books, transportation depending on how they live. It's too large a margin of error to take an arbitrary "total cost" and make people think it applies to their lifestyle. At least with tuition, its pretty much carved in stone, and people can guestimate their living expenses from there. (And when it comes to books - not all of us will buy every book the school advises us to buy anyway).

I see your point but I think you could still use school's estimated budgets as a better estimate of how much a school costs.

This list would imply that it costs the same thing to attend WashU vs. BU when their estimated budgets probably show something along the lines of a 15k difference.

you could always have two columns - one for tuition, one for tuition+ budget - then it could be like the USNews research and primary care rankings and we're premeds so we like lists with different criteria!!

If someone would be so kind please add Michigan State University (Both CHM and COM) Instate is $18,900 Out of State $40,500. These are 2002-2003 figures and it will be more next year but it hasn't been announced yet. Cost of living is around $20,000.

Ok, whoever put the costs for NYMC is an idiot. Tuition is projected to be $34,040 (not $40,000) with total living costs (including health and dental insurance) about $53,080 for the entering year 2003 (class of 2007's first year), dropping them from 3 to 9 on the list for tuition.

While it is good to keep a school's tuition in mind, don't let it prevent you from applying to that school. At the University of Colorodo for example, I believe that the 61k tuition only applys to out of state students in the first year (maybe first two years?). After that, you can gain CO residency and pay in state tuition.

Another thing to keep in mind - schools with higher tuition may give more grants/scholarships in their financial aid packages. Out of the schools I applied to, the one with the highest tuition gave out a need-based aid package to make it the least expensive out of all options, including my state school.

Good points.

However, your situation with the big need-based aid is the exception and not the rule for private schools. Many students will have expected contributions through the roof if their parents are even somewhat well off. It is true though, that big name privates (especially the Ivies) have been known to throw around a lot of cash to incoming students (scholarships that is). Many lower ranked privates though are very stingy with grants/scholarships and some won't even give any money until the 2nd year.

You know... if you guys would just pay the $8 you could go to USNews and world report and they'd list the top 70 or so schools in order from least to most expensive. 🙄

Besides, that list is bogus. Why is UT Houston $22 000 (obviously counting living expenses) but with other schools only the tuition is accounted for (Northwestern for example).

Well, you can take that up with USNews... tell them their stats are bogus. 🙄

The list I gave is for ~out-of-state~ tuition only... for all the schools.

If you want the in-state tuition... room and board... or any of those other details, you can either call up the schools, go to each of their websites... or just break down and pay USnews for access to their data.

I know the US news list is wrong because just for example UC Davis in state tuition averages to about 33k per year for tuition, books, etc. I wish it was 21k in state.
