Why don't we keep a running list of fellowships that have offered out interviews and offers for positions? This can help us determine whether or not to accept a position at a program other than our first choice. Thanks.

It's hard to say how programs pick those they interview. I am finishing at a "top 15" (by most lists posted here) anesthesiology program.

ITE score of 33 after CA1 year
one publication during residency
Pain Award
USMLE scores from 230-245

Interviews at several good programs
No interviews at Wake, Texas Tech, or Cleveland Clinic

 Happy to be going where I am

Here's to having a match one day

I don't think all of those programs have granted interviews yet. Can you please add to the list which ones did offer you? It'd be helpful. Anyhow, it seems that the programs currently offering are:

UCLA/VA (PMR)
UCIrvine
UCDavis
UVA
Loyola
Univ of Iowa
Univ of Chicago
Johns Hopkins
U Pitt
Vanderbilt
Texas San Antonio
Texas Tech
Dartmouth
Cornell
UNC Chapel Hill
Wayne State
U of Maryland
Children's Hospital of Boston (Harvard)

Sorry for the confusion

I was an applicant last year. Unfortunately the programs where I didn't get an interview did not notify me until after I called them. I called Cleveland Clinic after not hearing back from them, and they told me the bad news. Two weeks later, I got a letter from them. LOL

Had to call TTU and Wake to find out as well.

I had all application materials in by the end of May.
Unfortunately, many programs will not contact you if you are not going to get an interview. Don't assume offers haven't gone out because you haven't heard anything.

The way the pain fellowship directors and coordinators handled their interview process during the year I applied was the most unprofessional application cycle I could imagine. For many programs to which I applied, I never received any response whatsoever. There were very few exceptions which handled the process well.

Mount Sinai in NYC sent out email invitation 2 days ago

Our program does send out declines; however, not sending any acknowldgement is fairly standard in the business world (from when I interviewed in the non-medical world). Many people apply for jobs and never hear anything from large corporations. It becomes incumbent on the applicant to follow through.

Likewise, it is not any better when an applicant sends out a mass email sent to multiple programs asking for info.

Training is ultimately a relationship amongst colleagues and everone should (within their busy schedules) attempt to preserve that collegiality.

In our program, if you are interested in us and get another offer,, we ask that you call us and we will look at our list and tell you (in 20 minutes) if should take your offer or if we can counter. Fully about 1/3 of our applicants last year (20 people) exercised this. We want everyone to make use of their opportunities and not get screwed-you never know when you'll be working for the guy you just interviewed-not good form to screw potential colleagues.

Assman,

Can you please give more info on the pain program at Cornell? The posts on this site don't paint the best picture about it. Is this true? Thanks.

Sure. 1 year fellowship. 3 Hospitals: NY Hospital-Cornell; Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Hospital for Special Surgery. 15 Attendings, 8 fellowship spots (I am told #2 in size in the country, but not certain). 3 years ago we underwent a major restructuring. Combined 2 seperate fellowships of 9 fellows into 8 fellows. Fellows spend 3 months at each hospital, 3 months remain as elective time. Of this 1/2 (6 weeks) is devoted to ACGME required rotations of 2 weeks each in Rehab, Neuro and Psych etc; The remaining 6 weeks is open for you to go to any of the 3 hospitals for more training, go on an away rotation to another ACGME approved program etc. We have tried to wok in the basics (Spine, Gen Pain, Cancer Pain) while giving fellows flexibility. We pay for presentations at conferences and are very tight knit and personable. Are we perfect, no, but doubtful any program can make that claim. I have just posted the latest procedure numbers and am working on the lecture schedules. In case curious go here:

http://analgesia.home.att.net/timbo.html

Note procedure numbers are underestimate as 2 fellows did not log numbers online, next year it will be mandatory.

And yes, before 3 years ago we did suck and we did realize that and felt that for the viability of the fellowship major changes had to be made. If you have been invited for an interview, come and we will elucidate you. We will not abuse you (at least not too much 🙂 )- we realize we will ultimately work with you and rely on you in the future and do not wish to alienate our colleagues- in fact 5 of the 15 Attendings at the 3 hospitals are recent ex-grads within the last 3 yrs.

---yup....U of C's are all taken apparently.
Anyone hear from Columbia?? or even Harvard/Spaulding ?

Bunch of duplicates for me that have already been listed prior.
Also MGH today

Still waiting to hear from others... Frustrated that I am starting to interview next week, but most of the programs I really would like to go to (for a variety of reasons) like Tri-Institute and MGH I'm not interviewing until late August/September. Others I haven't heard from.

I wish there was a match. I don't know what I will do if I get offers from some of the earlier programs before I go visit my top priorities later.

What I've heard is that the 'community' is pretty small. You want to be as upfront as possible with these places and tell them that you would really like to hold off on the offer, etc. Otherwise, you could be burning some bridges.

Mine are also listed in prior messages as well... Everything is scheduled towards late August all the way through October...

Feel your pain. How did MGH notify you (email, snail mail, call)?

I thought what was real nice about Penn, was the secretary actually called. Great gesture!👍

Has anyone heard from MD Anderson, Emory, Duke, Wake or UCSF? I am told Miami will be reviewing apps in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, MD Anderson sent me an "alert" to account activity last Tuesday...searched for my ID and password to get a rejection letter ;-)

Received a decline letter from Duke on Friday. Waiting on Miami also. Gonna be tough to get the time off for these interviews.

I got offered an interview from Duke a few weeks back. Also from U Mich, Wayne, Vandy, Cornell, NYU, U Penn, U Pitt, Hopkins, Children's Boston, UVA, UNC, Beth Israel in NY. Also, I got one offer for a position a few weeks ago.

Atleast you are an attending. Imagine how much harder it is for us residents. They barely will let us go and interview!

Not so easy sleep... tough for me too! I'm sure you'll work out something with your program, and I wish you all the best with your interviews...

I'm just kidding...I'm sure it's tough for everyone.

did they fill Duke positions?

Don't be discourage with Emory program. The secretary, ann murray, is fairly unorganized and they won't begin to interview until the fall. When you interview their the program is fairly comprehensive and you will get exposure to current techniques and procedures, but of significant note is the university wide policy regarding medical device and drug companies, you will have to pay for your own dinners at their talks and for procedure courses for SCS, and verts, and kyphos, you will be expected to pay for your own flight and hotel. the crackdown throughout the entire university is serious and is adhered to by the program director.

wow...that's pretty intense.
