Screening: schools look at certain parts of your application (usually GPA/MCAT, sometimes extracurriculars also) and will only send secondaries to applicants that meet their criteria.

Non-screening: schools that just send out secondaries to everyone (usually to make lots of money 😛 ).

My understanding of screening is a process to eliminate candidates after looking at AMCAS application. These schools will evaluate applicants based only on AMCAS application. Usually if your stats are good you pass and recieve a secondary and/or interview. If your stats aren't good like mine, you don't hear things for a while and probalby a rejection letter in a few weeks.

Hope this helps. If not please PM me, and I can try to clarify more.

remember that one time where u learned how to be patient with people new to the board/med school process? my bad, u never did...wow

NYU and Pitt also screen

I don't think U of Pitt screens cause they sent me a secondary before my AMCAS was even verified, pretty much like 2 days after I submitted my AMCAS. So unless all they screen for is glancing at GPA and MCAT score, I doubt they do too much screening. But that's just my guess

Hmm, that's weird because Pitt says they screen on their website. Perhaps your unverified GPA was what they primarily looked at in your case.

It is in my genius opinion that I suggest.. if you are not going to help this man out, do not bother posting.

University of Florida screens. University of Michigan and Michigan State University have a dubious screening process. Send them money, then they'll decide whether or not to give you a secondary. Clever, eh?

Miami, Duke and Pitt screen

Duke doesn't screen anymore. Their website is out of date.

yeah, you've registered this month and you're an expert. 🙄

Look, to all the people who think I'm being rude:

It's YOUR career, and this information can be found by either READING the MSAR, doing a search on SDN (this information is out there), or contacting the schools.

Believe me, the information that you get on SDN will be anectdotal at best. It's not nearly as reliable as looking up the infoformation yourself. It's YOUR CAREER, see?

[/soapbox]

And this is only like the four BILLIONTH time this question has been asked de novo. 🙄

Actually, the MSAR has not been accurate regarding the practices of several schools this cycle, including Stanford. MSAR says the school screens - but recent events illustrate otherwise.

It depends on what schools you're talking about. I applied to 30 schools (including seven from Texas/TMDSAS) and only four out of that number were incorrect. There are >100 medical schools in the United States, so individual choices might influence the proportion of correct answers.

However, one could begin by making a list from the MSAR and then checking each individual school's website. That's what I did. Pain in the ass, but it worked.

Good luck

The MSAR is valuable, but incredibly lacking in good information.

True. I do not tout it as a panacea. But it will often give you little nuggets like whether a school is rolling or non-rolling in admissions. that kind of information might save you a trip to the web or waiting for an answer on SDN.
