Since when is attracting and training young nurses a problem? Most nursing schools I know of have waiting lists for admissions. The only problem is wasteful spending and irresponsible budgets that keep money out of higher education that might expand university training programs.

WTF is wrong with US nurses? You cannot pinch them, ugly too (a significant percentage...), and now they are "almost doctors"....Man - take a sabbatical
in eastern Europe and post after that your experience.
 
Buck up? What about all the millions of dumb calls I got as an intern from nurses? I'm done with this guy

It seems pretty clear where this is going......a 2 tiered health care system. One tier where you only see docs who work with a smaller number of a patients and another where you will likely see a midlevel and occasionally a doc. One system will run privately with all the efficiency and quality that comes with people trying to work hard for their money. The other will be have a lot of inefficent gov't waste where work gets done on a 9-5 pace. It will kinda like being in a union where you get your coffee breaks and 1 hr lunches.

On the positive note, most of us will be on the private system so maybe it won't be so bad
 
What in the absolute **** is this guy talking about? Listening to that BS was like having Joe Blow off the street come into a room full of physicians from all fields and instructing them how to care for a patient from hospital entry to hospital exit.

Sadly, like every other politician before and after him, his verbal diarrhea will mean absolutely nothing when it comes to his own family. He'll demand the finest care from the most qualified of physicians regardless of procedure or treatment, knowing all the while that isn't what he's bought for every other American. The elite minority will still demand the finest care in his world, with the masses settling for the scraps. Yay socialism. 👎
 
He doesn't have an excellent understanding of how a healthcare system works. Nurses typically take care of at most 4 patients. Physicians are typically taking care of much more than that. Moreover, they run on a shift. If we take 45 minutes to explain something, something another patient needs will have to wait. That is not the case with nurses unless another patient needs something immediately. The longer we spend with people, the less time we usually have to give to somebody else. Moreover, if we spent that much time, we'd never leave the hospital. Again, not true with nurses, they leave when the clock stops.

You have to understand the different roles people play. Of course the nurses will have more time to spend with you, they have to be in the same 50 feet all day long. They are upset when they are split on different wings of the same floor. We are running all over hells half acre to get places. Moreover, their cost to spending time with you is minimal. For us, its a matter of whether we want to leave the hospital ever.

And yes, the nurses did not go into medicine to get rich. But then again, they probably didn't feel like studying or working that hard either.

Nurses dont dx meninigitis. Yah, nurses are in the room, that's cuz the MDs are busting their butt trying to figure out the dx.
 
When I posted that democrats OVERWHELMINGLY support nurses, Arch said that "that is a very ignorant statement".
I am a nurse and I support nurses overwhelmingly but not when it comes to destroying healthcare in this country.
It does reveal something true. Americans trust nurses more than doctors. We do the heavy lifting in healthcare. That should be commended. However, people come to the hospital to see doctors.
Arch, Plankton, Taurus....care to weigh in?
 
If you don't understand medicine, like most of the US population, then you're likely to agree with Obama on this issue. The nurses definitely work hard, but their patients lists never cover multiple pages, they don't cross several units in a day seeing patients, they don't go from the floor to the OR to the ICU back to the floor back to the OR, etc. etc. in the course of a day/night. In a way I really do envy nurses as they're really able to connect and win the trust of our patients. Most physicians have such demands on their time that it's extremely easy to come across as brash or uncaring. We truly need to make sure we're making the effort to connect with our patients and make them feel like we care, as we surely all do.
 
Can't wait 'til I'm a "young resident that doesnt' quite know what he's doing" so that a nurse can "buck me up."

What I don't understand is he can easily brown nose the nursing union without smashing physicians... why does he insist on it?

Could it be the other way around?
Could it be that nurses "OVERWHELMINGLY" support democrats and that's why they are getting some love from the president?
If you are so concerned about the destruction of the health care system maybe you should educate your fellow nurses and tell them to stop supporting the administration's plans.
This would be more effective than trolling on a physician web site and bragging that you have done "enough damage".

exactly he is smarter than that.

I dont agree with anything he said however.. he knows who he needs supprt ffrom... 3 million nurses or 900K docs half of whom cant wait to retire..

he chose to be on the side of nurses to get his bill passed.. its all politics.

Yes, it's all politics. He also dumbs it down to the nurses. You can sense that he's talking down to them all along with his ra-ra routine, especially at the end. He modifies his language accordingly, dropping his "g"s, tossing in colloquialisms, and throwing in a jab or two at the stupid, evil doctors. Very slick. Hope his "bill" falls flat on its face and that he starts getting some criticism for porkulus and Iraq.
 
Wow. It's so cute watching you lot get all puffed up and hissy. Honestly, if you just appreciate that he's not insulting doctors, just trying to do some PR work for the reforms he's trying to pass by appealing to nurses, you don't need to latch on to imagined inuendos about nurses being better than doctors. He could easily have a group of physicians around him next week for another speech. It's really sad to see such a well-educated (medically at least) population reacting in such a child-like fashion. I can only hope there are some rational, compassionate anesthetists out there as well who aren't so caught up in protecting their financial stakes at all costs.

I will not be surprised if some day he says

she has a dr of philosophy degree (in nursing) and barry is introducing her as "doctor wakefield" in a medical setting. This is incredibly misleading, and intentionally so. in the clinical setting, only MD's should be referred to as "dr."
 
I would agree that in a hospital/clinical setting it would be inappropriate; however, in the setting of the video, if he had been introducing a professor of engineering, he should still have said doctor.

He does go to great lengths in his verbal support of nurses, and a few disparaging remarks about physicians. Big picture: nurses and physicians make up a team. There are good and bad members of each group, so both "sides" should avoid generalizing about members of the other. We as physicians and future physicians should no more minimilize the important role of nurses than we should accept it from others about physicians (I am looking at you, Mr. President).

Ready? Here it comes:
IT IS ABOUT MONEY, EVERY THING IN LIFE IS ABOUT MONEY.
Politicians do politics to protect the financial interests of certain groups and basically for MONEY.
Your daddy sent you to medical school hoping that one day you might make some MONEY.
People get up in the morning and go to work for one thing: MONEY!

i remember reading about this medical student who was asked by a family member.. are you a doctor and the med student said yes.. and the guy took a gun out and shot him to death because he was unhappy about the care he got.. if you are gonna call yourself doctor be prepared for the consequences.. LOL



But it is obvous what obama is trying to do.. he is siding with the nurses because he feels they will be best poised to stick together and support his bill en masse. The doctors wont support his bill.. en masse.. so why should he support docs with his rhethoric.


The only one who told michael jackson that it was a bad idea to use propofol was a NURSE.. All the doctors were doing is trying to make money and taking risks because they thought they could get away with it. How does that make us look? It makes us look horrible

Simply, certain groups got billions of dollars, and now everyone else has to cut cost to pay for it, in the healthcare sector it translates to pay cuts for doctors, and nurses filling the gap, whether it be in Anesthesia or Primary care, and it's going to happen.

Paid my own way, while supporting 2 children. Parents on social assistance thanks very much. Oh, and now R4 anesthesia. Money is important, that's not the point. The point is, things aren't as black and white as some of you clearly think. Getting your panties all in a knot about changes that will benefit people who don't have their basic health care needs met but cause the upper crust (ie, we physicians) to still make a good living is reactionary and morally suspect.

Discuss.

I think I want to watch that video again this weekend. I'll cue it up to around the 8 min. mark, then take a shot every time he says "nurses".

Maybe by the end of the video, I'll be so drunk I'll forget who I voted for last Nov.


Seriously, although it is an affront to our profession, it is clearly a fluff piece to look good and drum up support from a 3 million person base that always feels as though their voice isn't heard. It's actually a wise political move, as distasteful as it is to swallow.
 
It comes down to your belief regarding the role of government. If the point of it is to protect your rights and nothing beyond this...

Not to mention the whole idealogical discussion of whether healthcare is a right or a privilege. I think we can all agree that emergency care is a right (and if not, I don't think anyone moral would go to a hospital that turns away a dying child because of lack of payment... the market would dictate that, yes?). However, is it feasible to provide even preventative healthcare services as a RIGHT to all citizens? Do we accept that there will always be a gradient in society, and that we must simply decide upon what we will be our acceptable "minimum?"

Calling each other infantile does nothing to help, and disparaging a person because her/his parents' life does not seem to be helpful, either.

For our education, how do you all justify your ideologies?

I see you're from Canada. If your system is so great, why do Canadians come to the US or abroad for healthcare?

I don't know how much your medical education costs, but I'm staring down the barrel of 250K and I just started intern year. My wife and I would like to pay off my medical school debt before we die. And BTW, she's a nurse, and she wholly agrees that we doctors deserve the money we get paid for the rigorous education we voluntarily undertake so we can help people. I can tell you one nurse that is unhappy with Obama.

Those old people who have money and tell you that money is not important for happiness are simply lying to you because if these old people were poor they won't find anybody to wipe their rear ends when they can't do it anymore.

cant even begin to discuss how many PHYSICIANS that I know who voted for Obama are REGRETTING their vote.

So far my count is up to 5, and is rising...

The bottom line is Obama will cater to the nurses because there are quite possibly more of them and they dish out cash. Unless we COLLECTIVELY start support him and his democratic colleagues. Thereby, making them less popular....This will only continue.

Until the government-run system begins to break down, prompting legislation that will punish and infringe upon that nice private system to level the playing field.
