One school I decided to add to my list of schools has a literature prerequisite (Hackensack) along with an English composition pre-req. The English composition pre-req slot on the secondary has a minimum requirement of just one course, and I have taken two courses of English composition, can an English course fulfill the literature requirement? Will I need to take a literature course? I am quite interested in this school so I will go ahead with this, but I have already completed the English requirements for my major, which seems to be sufficient for the vast majority of schools.

Just claim that the classes meet the requirement.

Did at least one of those classes include reading any amount of literature? If so, count it.

How 19th Century of them. It's rather quaint.

From Hackensack's website:

One semester of each of the following:

  • English Composition
  • Literature
So, it does not appear to require "English" literature so if you want to take American Literature, or African-American Literature, or Children's Literature, or Fables and FolkTales, you are free to do so and meet the requirements.

I was interested in that school but when I read their requirements, I said “no way.” Seems like they are looking for a humanities/liberal arts person with some science courses instead of someone who would have gone the “traditional” science route. I’m in the NE, and their requirements were just out of my league. Tbh, I think that most are really pointless: not sure why Literature should be required to attend medical school. Alas, there’s a CARS section on the MCAT. Is that not enough for them (although I think CARS is quite irrelevant).

It appears that they are looking for broadly educated applicants rather than those who focused soley in the natural sciences. They may also be aiming to shrink the applicant pool to a reasonable subset of all possible applicants.
