Just how competitive is LIU‘s program? This is my top choice but I’m having major imposter syndrome.. plus need to get this waiting period over so I am here to overanalyze everything and also ask for advice on how to improve my application if someone is willing to chime in!
It seems my lack of stats background is my biggest hurdle. I think i may have underestimated that because I kept being told it’s ok, that’s what you’ll learn during the PhD and so on.
I interviewed at LIU and the interview went really well! But so did my interview at another program that I ended up waitlisted at so not holding my breath. My interviewer pointed out my lack of stats background and I was very honest about this being my weak spot but that I’m working on improving this and feel committed to doing so. I have an unrelated BA from a different field and then got a masters in counseling (I wanted a degree that would lead to a liscence so I could practice while applying to PhDs) I have been working in a research lab for the past 3 years but I have not taken any statistics courses although I plan to this summer. I have a 3 years clinical experience but looking at folks who got accepted into LIU‘s program in the past they all seem to have a stats/research heavy Bachelor or Master that feels very different from mine.. I felt confident about it all until then..
I would love to think some programs welcome career changers with a non traditional background but I feel like I lose against my co applicants when it comes to that despite my research + clinical experience (I have one publication, 3 in prep and also lead projects at my lab) plus the clinical experience. However I can’t help but feel like I’m not competitive enough.
anyways I went off topic (LIU) here but if anyone wants to chime in please do so 🙂 much appreciated!
