Hello all,

Was wondering if anyone could provide some insider (student perspective) information on LIU Post's Psy.D. program, specifically under the severe and persistent mental illness concentration?

For example, who your mentor is? How do you like the program? Externship experiences? Class experiences, etc?

Thanks!

Hello all,

I'm not in LIU CW Post's program, but I do know that Long Island University, both the Brooklyn and CW Post programs have good, solid training reputations in the NYC area. I've heard this from supervisors, directors-of-training and fellow clinicians-in-training (met on externships). I know the Brooklyn campus is one the few programs in the NYC area that places you in a clinical externship in the first semester of the first-year, when most programs wait until the second year to begin actual clinical training. I can't imagine CW Post's program would be too different, but I'm not sure of the differences between the two programs (other than the obvious PsyD-PhD focus).

If your focus is SPMI, then you would certainly be able to tailor your externships toward sites that specialize in this population. My suggestion is to contact the department secretary at CW Post's program and ask to be put you in touch with a current student in their PsyD program. (Most programs have class representatives that would be willing to speak with prospective students.) It couldn't hurt to try, especially if you think you are a competitive applicant. Before doing this, I would recommend having your 'pitch' ready in case you are put in contact with the Director of Training first. This way you can leave a lasting (good) impression if you decide that it is a program that you'd like to pursue.

Good luck! :luck:
