Hi,

I am an international visiting student and I have an elective later this year in US in liver transplant surgery department

I have not rotated in Liver transplant and I was wondering what are the common procedures do they actually do?

I'm sure they don't do liver transplant surgery everyday..what are the bread and butter surgeries that they do everyday?

Thank you for your help in advance

They don't necessarily do surgeries every day, and i wouldn't call anything they do as "bread and butter"

if its a liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgery department, they will also do various liver resections, whipples, hepaticojejunosotomy's, total panc's, and many surgeries on liver transplant patients. If you are at a program that does living donor, you will also see those procedures.

But your rotation will be heavy on the post-op management of transplant patients, that is, immunosuppression, rejection, infections/sepsis. Also on the pre-op evaluation.

Depending on where you are, you may be on a very non-operative rotation.... or you may be busy. Thus is the nature of the transplant services.
