I wanted to get input from allopathic students - so please don't move this thread to financial aid!

Did any of you have to go outside of your school's budget to finance your living/personal expenses? From what I've seen, budgets are tight and I can't imagine everyone would make it four years without unexpected expenses (vet bills, etc.)

uh... I know you can't take any more student loans over the budget they set up. They're very strict as to how much you can take. (Like I couldn't get them to increase my loans to pay for my wife's health insurance).

I could live on the budget my school sets up, but I want a slightly nicer apartment without a roommate in a safe part of town and I'll probably go out to eat sometimes, etc. I only anticipate needing $1,000-3,000 extra, so I will either take out a private loan or an "interest free loan" from my parents.

I think it's probably hard to stay within the budget if you do not plan to have a roommate.

I stay in budget pretty easily and i live on my own in a nice apt. I even tend to have about a $1000 left over at the end of the year. I think it is just a matter of budgeting and I always try to live on $200 to $300 less per month then they give us so that if an emergency comes up i won't have to dip too much into my savings.
