Hi, my partner had to take a leave of absence for one month during term 4 after I got diagnosed with post partum depression 3 months after giving birth. Also within those 3 months he got an F during one of the shorter term (term3). He goes to an IM medical school. Has he reduced his Chances to go into an anesthesiology residency program? What does have to do to even the balance and increase his chances?

If it means international then chances for anesthesia are very slim

Is there anything he can do, to increase his chances?
Besides the obvious things (ie step, research etc), probably not. He likely will only be able to match family medicine, pediatrics, or community internal medicine and that’s if everything is perfect. Does he have a visa

Anesthesia has become very competitive recently and the outlook for international students wanting that specialty is poor with a recent match rate of only 39%. If he applies anesthesia he needs to have a very competitive application and apply to back up programs as well (family med, internal med). At this point it looks like emergency med is willing to take anyone with a pulse so he can consider that.
