Here in rural PA, there are areas designated as "loan forgiveness" where if you work, you will not only get a typical salary but also the government will pay off your med school debt as well in order to provide an incentive for doctors to set up practice in rural, medically underserved areas. Has anyone else heard of this or is it only a PA thing? Does anyone know where good info on areas of the country where such programs exist? I'm REALLY interested in such a program because I'm going to be graduating with a $160k+ debt when I graduate from my school.

Peace!

I know that Alabama and Mississippi both have similar programs to what you are talking about. I am not sure whether or not you must attend med school in the respective state. I do know more about the Alabama program, and if you agree to work in an "underrepresented" area they will cut you a check for the balance of your loans on top of your salary. Basically, allowing you to either pay off your school loans or use the money for whatever you wish. These positions are in the deep south and in some backwoods areas, but there are several suburbian areas that are qualified as "underrepresented". Hope this help you.

hey neurotrancer, would you mind posting more info about the PA program or a website that's helpful? thanks!
