Loans in the Glide Year

If you do a post-bacc to take the science requirements and do not do a linkage, you will have a glide year before med school. Assuming you paid for post-bacc with some sort of loans, you will have to start paying them back 6 months after you're no longer in school full-time. This means that you will be paying off your loans in the middle of the glide year - how do you pay for this if you are volunteering and not working?

I think the assumption is that you will work during your glide year. Why would you not? You can still volunteer while you work.

Your loans won't go into repayment if you are taking part time classes. You may want to stay in school part time to make the bill collectors go away, and also pick up some useful classes like biochem.

i agree, i was worried about that year lag between postbacc and medschool. However, taking couple classes to go part time during that year delay is the way to go. Remember, those science classes that are required by postbacc are only the minimal requirements. Its always good to show that u can handle upper level science classes to impress med schools as well as prepare yourself for the kind of classes and difficulty that you will soon face at med schools.

I finished up a master's in December, and basically have this semester/summer "off" before starting medical school. I'm working now and can start minimal repayments when my grace period ends, but I'll resume in-school deferrment in August. Some lenders will allow you to enter into forbearance due to "economic hardship" so you wouldn't have to start repayment immediately. I'd advise calling up your lender, explaining the situation, and seeing if you can make special arrangements.
