Hi all, I'm a senior in high school. Over the course of this year, I was accepted into 4 out of the 5 colleges that I applied to.

I got into Florida State University, the University of South Florida, the University of Central Florida, and the University of North Florida. I was rejected from the University of Florida. I have a 3.9 GPA and I'd say I'm a fairly well-rounded student.. but I suppose that is irrelevant. Here is my dilemma.

I've pretty much decided on going to the University of South Florida (Tampa)--I live in Gainesville--my father, on the other hand, is pushing for me to stay at home and go to what used to be the community college: Santa Fe because it was cheaper and he says that "no one cares where I get my AA"

I'm planning on majoring in Biology and then applying to the three accredited Dental Schools in Florida [University of Florida, Nova Southeastern, and Lake Erie] and one in Georgia [Georgia Regents University].

Money isn't exactly a problem for my family, but dad is really pushing for me to "save him some" and for me to stay at home. I guess my question is--how do Dental Schools look at credits from local colleges compared to state Universities? I would hate to hurt my chances of getting into Dental School just to make my parents happy when I have the opportunity to go to a University.

Community college credit is usually not accepted for pre-req classes, but call the FL dental schools to check. I would pick the cheapest of the ones you got into and attend that school. Good luck.

The fact that it is a local college will make no difference, provided that it is a 4-year university/college and not a CC.

I also lived and home and saved my parents some dough. School was a 15 minute commute. I think all four years cost less than 35k.

Make sure you go to a 4-year, though. It will save you headaches.

A lot of people on this forum seem to have a certain "rule-book" of how everything needs to be done and if you don't follow them then you will never get into dental school. Forget these people in all honesty they are nothing but naysayers; they are not on the admissions committee themselves; they just regurgitate their same ideal pathway and live by it.

My family did not have the financial needs to send me to a 4 year university so I went to CC for a few semesters and have worked all throughout my undergrad to fund paying for my current University. My advice to you is to go to the cheapest route you can unless money truly is not a hindering factor. Basic credits mean next to nothing in my opinion; if you have the heart and determination to become a dentist just focus and it really wont matter in the end because you'll make it 🙂

HOWEVER, I do advise you to limit the courses you take at CC. If you choose to take some of the lower level pre-reqs I would advise you to contact prospective schools and find out their regulations since many schools have different views vs others.

Although, you DEFINITELY want to take your more advanced courses and upper-level courses at a university. I.e - Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Immunobiology, Histology, ect.

When it comes down to applying if you have a solid DAT score with ample amount of volunteering it truly does not matter where you took your AA (like your dad said).

TLDR; limit CC credits - take upper electives at University -
Best of luck
