My undergrad was in Pennsylvania and I moved to California to go to vet school. However, I wanted to live on the opposite side of the country.

I'm from CA, and I just keep moving further from home. I moved 8 hours down the coast for undergrad, and am now in WI for vet school. I'm also not somebody who has ever gotten homesick though, so while I'm totally fine out here, not everyone might be as happy doing the same.

I stayed in-province for both undergrad (1.5 h drive) and vet school (2 h drive).

I would've loved to go abroad but really didn't want to pay international tuition. I can't really justify going away when tuition is so cheap here ($5-6k/year in undergrad, $8k/year at OVC).

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!! I need to move to Canada and become a citizen!!! 😱

Or even gain dual citizenship somewhere in the UK. When I studied abroad there my ex was paying like 6000 pounds/yr for med school. I told them what I spent on undergrad in a year and they were like "yeah...i'm not even going to be close to that debt after 5+ years of school." And they're all freaking out now cause tuition prices might rise towards 10k a year. I'd be beyond happy to pay that.

But in response to the question, I'm not worried about moving far away for vet school. My undergrad was only 1.5 hours from my house and my mom didn't really want me going further because she knew I wouldn't ever come back (nothing against her, I'm just really independent and don't rely on people too much). And after spending my junior year in England and not getting homesick except maybe like once, the distance isn't really a concern for me. I actually applied to the University of Glasgow and was accepted, so I might end up going there if my financial situation can take a turn for the better. If not, I might sadly have to decline the acceptance and wait a few years. =(

Just... wow!🙁

5 hours away for undergrad, 3000 mi for vet school in another country 😀 i sometimes wish i was closer to home, but i reality, i stay so insanely booked and busy that it wouldnt matter if i was 10 mins down the road, a few hours, or in another time zone. i simply do not have time (rare exceptions) for anything but studying :-/

From Norcal and moved to Socal for undergrad. I'm moving to the UK for vet school and couldn't be happier. I love traveling and I get restless easily so moving is fun for me. No homesickness here.

I stayed in province too, but mostly due to me being naive. When I applied to university, I thought to do a pre-vet program which was offered at once university. On career day in grade 12, a friend told me that another university had a "pre-vet" program. So I went to that university because I liked it better and because I used to live in the area. It is about 7 hours away from my hometown.

Now I am one hour away from my hometown. I almost did my 5th year in another province because I am getting tired of this province. I have relatives in British Columbia and Ontario, that I was allowed to stay with, but they both lived a little too far from the institutions I was interested in.Being this close to home comes in handy when the stupid buses went on strike. But after spending 5 years going to school and working in another city, I feel like I have lost my independence with this strike.

I moved 3k miles away for undergrad (CA to VA) and will probably go to school about 6 hours (driving) from home for vet school (if I get into Davis!). Also like other people have said, home sickness has ever been an issue for me, and I love being independent.

Haha..hence why I couldn't justify leaving Ontario for school! The discrepancy between in-province and international tuition is ridiculous here, there are ~20 American students in my class and they're paying $50k per year vs. our $8k. 😱

I moved about 3 hours away for undergrad and only went home for breaks/holidays and moved 8 hours away for vet school with the same visiting routine. Homesickness isn't really a problem for me but I do miss my dogs!

That explains why our vet school appears to be the most expensive for international students. I can go to the caribbean for $28 000/year tuition (which is huge when you cannot get loans for it). Americans come here for $50 000/year tuition.

If you go to Memorial University of Newfoundland for undergrad, tuition is < $2500/year. Us here in the Atlantic provinces are complaining about rising tuition fees rising and how much our government student loan program sucks. Downside to going there for your education is that the weather is much colder and the only convenient way to get on and off the province is by flying.

I commuted 1h20min ish every day to school for undergrad. I got used to that so thats about my limit. I am considering going to vet school on another continent, but I'd likely live no further then an hour's drive away.

hahaha yeah umm did I say 1.25h? Forgot to mention erm... like 2-2.5h during our strike hahahaha. Stupid bus jerks. 😛

Hope your strike ends soon... its not the OC Transpo jerks again is it?

I grew up in Northern California my whole life. Went to undergrad 5.5 hrs down on the Central Coast and now I'm out in Kansas and couldn't be happier. But personally the Midwest fits my personality much better than CA so to each their own.

No it is not
But the strike is STUPID. It has been 18? days... and no end in sight.
One of my favorite local artists even wrote a song about it!

bus strike? oh goody. not experiencing that where i am. YET.

I am from the Southeast part of Texas, near Houston. I went to undergrad 10 hours away in Northwest Arkansas, for tuition reasons. When it came time to choose a vet school, proximity to my hometown was a huge factor. I only applied to schools that I deemed an appropriate distance. The most was 7 hours away and thankfully I was rejected because even that seems too far now.

I'm currently 4 hours from home to vet school.

Undergrad: 1500 miles
Gap year: 9000 miles
Vet: 8 miles

I would 100% move further for vet school, but I think it's the best option for me.

There are 2 univ I'm looking to transfer to for finishing my b.s, one is 20 min away and the other 45 min. Vet school is 35 min away, if I get accepted to Davis.

I personally traveled 1700 miles for undergrad. I'm from west Texas originally and go to school in Indiana (the climate shock is terrible). I will be going to vet school about 600-700 miles away from home at TAMU. So for me it will be a difference of 30 hrs. of driving as compared to about 12 hrs. of driving from home.

Either way you put it, Texas is a HUGE state and at least I will now be somewhat closer to home. And I honestly don't mind going so far away from home, as long as I have a way of getting back every once in a blue moon.

I haven't lived near where I grew up in so long that I don't consider it "home" any more. Several moves to various areas around the country, and "home" is now wherever I park my bones/cats/books.

I'd love to live close to my immediate family (my extended family is widely scattered -- we're a nomadic bunch 😉), but it's not my top priority. We keep in touch over the Internet, phone, visits, etc. I can't even imagine limiting myself to vet schools within [x] miles of them. (And I'd be SOL too, because there's not one closer than 4.5 hours away.)

While I'm pretty much perfectly content living anywhere (as long as it's at least a medium-sized town with warm weather!), and have been able to develop good friendships and support systems wherever I land, being far from parents/siblings/childhood friends/etc. isn't for everyone.

True, true true.

I had to go out of province for vet school - I'm from Nova Scotia, and they contract with AVC in PEI. For undergrad, I was an hour from my hometown, which was a nice distance. I liked living in the city my undergrad was in, but it was close enough that I could easily get home for a weekend or an emergency. I'm currently almost 5 hours away from my hometown, which is stressful at times. Especially now, when I really wish I could be around for my mom more, five hours feels like an eternity (I know I have lots of classmates who have it worse, and I'm not looking for sympathy!). I don't particularly like Charlottetown, which makes it worse.

I'm from VA, and go to Michigan State (undergrad and vet school). A total of 600 miles, ~8 hour drive if I book it, ~10 hours if I take my time.

I'm originally from South FL and my undergrad was 7 hours away. Vet school is only 4 hours away from that same home in FL, but since I recently re-located to upstate NY, it will be more like 23 hours from my current home. :lame:

It takes me about 15 minutes to walk to my CC from home,I'm planning on applying to vet school in uk right after im done with the community college cause I don't want get my bachelors. (I'm from NorCal

Did undergrad 4 hours away from home.

Doing vet school on the same campus.

Undergrad was about 4 hours away from home.
Vet school was about cross-country (call it 40 hours driving), but made it my home so distance is irrelevant.

Of course, I would say it should hardly matter. Don't tie yourselves down to your homes, otherwise you are gonna miss out on a lot in life.

I went to vet school 3280km (2000 miles) away from my family (I don't really call it home, because its not really anymore) and I still experience times when I'm extremely "family-sick". I was 17 when I made the move.

However, this has been helped by finding a steady, long term relationship here, some of my best friends moving here, finding a cat I love and perth being generally awesome. But I still miss my brother who I am very close too, and I'm definately still young enough to still want some mummy-hugs at times.

Definately hoping to move closer to my family once I start a family - but I'll probably end up further away before that happens.

I did have the option of going to school only 3 hours away from my family - but the school I'm at now was a much better fit. I don't regret that decision at all.

^^I might do that if I transfer to Davis for rest of ug...
