Locum Tenens Anesthesia

Hey guys, I enjoy being in anesthesia, and I'm proud of being part of this field. However, I have other sources of income and don't need a salaried full-time 40-60 hrs/wk and partnership track. Instead, I would like to know about jobs in anesthesia that:

1) are in one general location always (e.g. same city)
2) allow you to work when you want to or sometimes not at all

Is this A) the definition of locum tenens or is this something else B) where you practice under your own corporation and cover a bunch of hospitals/surgicenters in the city and work if they need you?

My understanding is that locum tenens means having to fly around to different cities to work.

If it's "B," what do you call this? And how are you compensated if you aren't paid a salary (eg. per day, per hour, etc.)?

From what I've read, locum tenens work can be quite varied. You're basically finding temporary positions, often filling in for someone's vacation time. If you contract each position on your own, then you can choose exactly where you work. If you live in a large enough city, you might be able to find enough locums jobs within that area to satisfy your needs.

If you go through a locum tenens staffing agency to contract multiple jobs, then you can specify where you're interested in to facilitate good matches.\

Locums tenens literally means in place of..

so usually locum jobs there is an absence and you are filling in in that absence..

what you are describing is truly independent private practice work. Where you make yourself available and the surgeons consult you and you do their cases.. IF you are busy or cannot do it.. you tell them so.. And you go to several hospitals or surgery centers.there are only a few cities where that is a viable option.. that is.. las vegas, Nevada.... and phoenix arizona and maybe a few other cities..

Locums in order to be busy you have to be willing to fly around the country... Not always but some of the time.. Get yourself some licenses and start locumming.. In fact I think if everyone had this idea. it would put an end to the groups ripping off the new graduates..
