I'm a graduating resident, and unsure of where to settle down long term. While trying to sort this out with my SO, I am considering staying in my residency city for another year, so that we can investigate new potential cities when I actually have time/money to do so (which I certainly do not during residency).

Since this would be a short term job, should I just look for locums options? I don't want to screw over a group by joining them and not being in it for the long haul, but the business end of being an IC and working locums only right out of residency is intimidating to me. Thanks for any help!

Short term and locums both would likely mean you are IC and self-employed. That means you are going to have to manage your own health insurance, disability, retirement, and quarterly taxes. It's not really that daunting. I figure out health insurance and disability once per year. Every month I calculate taxes, then just send the government a check every 3 months. Tracking expenses isn't difficult if you pay for everything with a credit card. Every month I just go down my credit card statements and record what I've spent on travel, food, gas etc.

The airmiles you get from doing locums is insane! Just got back from Europe round trip First, and in 2 days I go to Japan on JAL, also round-trip First with miles. If you use a card like Chase Sapphire reserve you get a 100K sign-up bonus plus 3X points on all food and travel. It adds up quickly to a nice vacation.

Locum sounds like a pretty good way to go for sure, if you don't mind traveling a lot. you probably end up making more too

Depending on where you live, you can work locums even at your hometown. Houston has places where one can easily find a locums gig paying top dollar in the suburbs for example

Most of my clients that do Locums really seem to enjoy the freedom and the ability to take a job in any part of the country they choose to then explore. The insurance is easy enough to handle on your own, don't let that be a turn off.
