Do you really have to be that religion (SDA) to get into this school (Loma linda)? I am a christian and I do not care about different branches among Christianity, cuz it all seems same to me; if you believe in God, you go to heaven.

As vicviper said, I've also heard from other SDN'ers that SDA are at an advantage at LL.

Also, I heard that Loma Linda asks on their secondary application if you are SDA/what is your religion.

No you don't have to be a SDA to get into Loma. If you are a christian and fit the type of dentist they are looking to make. They will find a way to get you in to their school.

All good responses to your question, certainly being SDA is an advantage towards acceptance when applying, the majority of each class is SDA but there are also a wide range of different faiths represented in each class. The school was founded over 50 years ago to educate SDA dentists as part of the Adventist owned Loma Linda University system.

I graduated from LLU in 2002. My class had about 90 graduates of which about 15 of us were non SDA. I am Catholic and through my 4 years they did NOT force any SDA philosophy down our throats. If you want an environment where, "To help your fellow man.", is the norm then LLU is a great place to learn dentistry.

lol what about muslim

i respect all faiths and would consider myself a spiritual person
does that make any difference? lol

Thanks for your response Professor!

However, I do have a question - where can I find what the other faiths mix is in your current class in terms of non-SDA or non-Christian for that matter?

The reason I'm asking is that LLU was the only school (out of 9 DS I applied) that did not send me the interview invite. I did fill out the secondary app and clearly stated about my faith ( I hope that was not the reason though)

Please let me know if you have that info. Thanks

There are not too many in the traditional program, I know the dental hygiene program has Muslim students, and I have several in the International Dentist Program. Yes, having a spiritual life does make a difference at Loma Linda.

I haven't seen breakdowns for each individual faith represented, just SDA and non-SDA. The competition for the non-SDA spots is pretty intense, about six applications for every spot.

so does being a christian help then? I don't know the difference between SDA and the religion that I am in.. I only know that I am a christian. I don't even know whether this is Presbyterian or something else.

So, if I put my religion as a christian, not SDA, my chance would be lower to get in?

if u are religious, apply there
if u dont fit wut religion they want..then save yourself the embarrassment DONT APPLY; why lower yourself??

on another note
I IMMENSELY DESPISE of schools such as Loma Linda..personally I feel schools like this which give an ENORMOUS preference to religion should not be allowed any funding from the NIH, etc...then again thats just my view

Yes it does help, and yes your chances would be lower if you are not SDA. However if you put that you are SDA but are not your chances would be about 0 since you would be falsifying information on your application. Some applicants have gone as far as joining a local SDA church just before application time, but that doesn't go over too well with the admissions committee, they have pretty much seen it all over the last 50 years🙂.

totally agree !!!!!

my friend and I did this experiment during the past cycle to see if we would even get an interview and we wrote what we truly believed (faith related) and of course I'm non-SDA.

And you guessed it right, we did not get an interview!

So the lesson learned - don't even bother applying if you are not an SDA

To clarify, Loma Linda does not receive any governmental support, that is why it is free to choose whomever it wants. When it comes to research grants from NIH, NIDCR etc. that is a competitive process open to anyone, not just limited to schools. If you have a proposal that has perceived benefits to the profession or public health it can be accepted.
I'm sorry that Loma Linda elicits such a strong negative emotion in you but fortunately there are 55+ other dental schools that should fit your requirements well.

I just now came across this thread and couldnt help but smile...why this bold highlighted badmouthing unless it is a case of sour grapes?..It serves no purpose to get angry and malign someone just because they didnt take you in!

NOW TO ME LOMA LINDA IS ONE OF THE BEST DENTAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE WORLD. Why??
1. Because we are from middle east,Non SDA and let me put it this way, someone who is closest to me was selected there for a much sought out programme and has been more than happy there for over 2 years.Nobody ever asked him to attend an SDA meeting.
2.I know of Topmost doctors in UAE of muslim origin trained in Loma Linda and call it family.
3. The famly atmosphere and personal attention to each student is something you have to experience to believe in..it is just amazing.

I think it is about time that people have a little more tolerance towards so called CHRISTIAN OR OTHER FAITH based organisations and what they choose to stand for...in the LAND of FREEDOM. Why despise them?Or attack them in a public forum?. It actually is not fair ..becoz I suspect they choose not to respond but show the other cheek.

For me Loma Linda is sweet Grapes for sure...highly recommended ..if you are good enough get in .
