I'm having a very tough time deciding on where to rank these three programs. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences with these programs? How do they compare in terms of training, prestige, etc?

Would getting a competitive fellowship be easier out of one program as compared to the others? Or are all three pretty each equals when it comes to the academic spectrum?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I am also curious about ranking these programs. Same boat.
Anyone?

I interviewed at all three and I was impressed by both Loma Linda and Harbor-UCLA, but not so much by UCI. Loma Linda is starting a Peds Surg fellowship in July, and has put residents into Peds Surg and Surg Onc. (Peds Surg this past year to University of Colorado). Harbor seemed like you could get decent fellowships with a good operative experience, but really trauma heavy. Also, another downside is its a county hospital, so you have to deal with working in a county hospital system. UCI just played the Orange County card all day, and I was not impressed. However, I will note that these programs are not high on my rank list, but if I had to rank them I would put them as:

1) Loma Linda
2) Harbor-UCLA
3) UCI

This list is based off of personal opinion gathered from my interviews, recent fellowship placement (Mostly Peds Surg and Surg Onc), operative experience. Again, I am sure others will feel differently, but this is my opinion for what its worth.

Ranking based on location: UCI--> Harbor--> Loma Linda
Ranking based on operative experience: Harbor-->Loma Linda-->UCI
Ranking based on less "malignant": Harbor-->Loma Linda-->-->UCI
Ranking based on reputation: UCI-->Harbor-->Loma Linda

Hopefully you interviewed at and were able to rank some of the better SoCal programs like UCSD and USC

Good luck!

I think you will receive adequate training at either program. My biased would be Loma Linda, UCI, Harbor. LLU has a well rounded training program with rotations at the VA, University and county hospital giving you a great flavor of different patient populations that will enhance ur experience. LLU has 3 fellowships, CT, vascular and peds surg, enough for an academic flavor without impeding on resident training(that being said look out for surg onc, MIS and Trauma/SICU coming within the next 5 years from what I've heard). Also LLU within the last several graduating classes has sent chiefs to many fellowships including
MIS/bariatric: Stanford, UCSD, UMissouri
Transplant: Stanford
Breast: Stanford
Surg Onc: U Miami, U Buffalo
colorectal: USC
plastics: UCLA
vascular: Loma Linda, UCLA-Harbor
Peds Surg: U Colorado
Trauma/SICU: Cedars Cinai, U Washington
Endocrine: John Hopkins

Any opinions on Kaiser-LA, USC and Huntington vs. the three aforementioned programs?
