Loma Linda???

I got my by way of email

Does anyone know if LLU uses AADSAS to update our status at all?

Did you receive your email today or you are an applicant from previous years?

I got my email this morning, for the 2012 cycle

Yea I got mine mid-day via email.

They sent an email around 11:30 am PST today, and as far as I know they don't update via AADSAS. They said that the acceptance would be updated on their own portal w/in 4 days, but I'm not sure if that impacts it says regarding interview/wait-list/rejection statuses.

hello! last year... i just noticed a change on AADSAS to "offer made" or something like that on Dec 3. i had to wait until after the weekend to call and ask what it really meant. Anyway, i didn't get an email until about Dec 8 and didn't get anything through mail until mid December.

well, however you get notified, good luck to all those applying this cycle. And congrats to those that got in. Look forward to seeing you next year!

This is comforting. I didn't see any changes on my AADSAS page yesterday and didn't get any emails. I'll keep hoping.

Thanks!

Mine got updated today to "Invited for Interview" (I interviewed back in Oct.) I think they're still waiting on one more rec from me.

Mine got updated to "under review" today. Loma wasn't even on my AADSAS yesterday. Is this good or bad?

they just updated the status today. it didn't appear on my list either until this morning.

My rejection showed up on AADSAS yesterday, so it looks like they use it.

Sorry to hear that... What was the date of your interview?

I didn't have one. I'm pretty sure it's because I didn't get a letter from a spiritual leader, although someone told me that didnt matter.

Hey guys, I'm currently a D1 at LLU, if you have any questions you'd like for me to answer...I'd be happy to answer them. Good luck to each of you! Hope to see you all soon!

Sure! 🙂 Thank you very much! How do you like the school overall? When the orientation/classes start in the school? Hope to join you soon! 🙂

The school is great and everyone is very friendly, which helps. We have some of the most brilliant people I've ever met in my life in our class...and it's a pretty competitive atmosphere, but that's to be expected. I'm lucky because I do not want to specialize so a little stress is taken off my shoulders, but it's still very stressful getting things done on time and staying on top of things. You will never be "on top" of things, but you definitely learn how to study more efficiently. I used to study every night like a fool, but it's not that serious. As long as you can kick it into high gear come 2-3 weeks prior to finals and study really hard, you will make it. The thing that's different about LLUSD is for most classes, we only take two tests for each class (a midterm and a final)...which sucks because 50% of your grade is relying on one tests and we've all had a bad morning. You will have some professors that go out of their way to trick you on tests, while others are dependable and sent out a "study guide" of the things to focus most on (VERY helpful). The thing that sucks the most is the week leading up to finals...they make it where you have tooth ID tests, wax quizzes, and lab finals for Dental Morphology class, which takes time away from your studying.

Sorry for the ramble, I'll try to answer your question more directly.

Orientation-last for about three days (I think we started on Wed, so orientation went through Friday). There is a lot of stuff to do during that time, forms to get filled out, dental equipment issue, etc...and it's tiring in and of itself. You will take a "presession" for the first three weeks during which time you will have two classes-Intro to the Dental Profession (VERY easy) and Biochemistry. I'm not too sure about the exact start date, but you can look it up on the LLUSD academic calendar.

Intro to the Dental Professions-you basically do cool things in the lab portion like make whitening trays, make casts/impressions, etc...and in the class portion you listen to different lecturers from all of the specialty fields (Oral Surgery, Ortho, Pedo, etc...) give a lecture on what the specialty encompasses and how you can pursuit it.

Biochemistry-the main professor of this class is very fair, if you get the same one we had this year. He's a Jamaican guy and he will always tell you "Don't worry about tha test man, ok?" Ha. He knows it's hard trying to learn so much in three weeks, and this will be the easiest science class you will take in dental school, by far.

Fall Qtr

Dental Anatomy/Morphology-very good professor, but tests are very tricky and misleading. He intentionally makes it that way to "help you on your boards." Read his test questions three times before marking an answer. It's actually very frustrating because sometimes you know the answer, and there are 3 correct choices, you'll know what I mean later. He's a wonderful guy and will do anything to help, so if you need it..ask. Lab for this class-was VERY hard for me at first, the waxing is very challenging for people that have never done it before. Before you get here, if you let me know (in advance) I will come in and try to help some of you guys with some techniques. The problem is that no one ever shows you any technique until midway through the course, when you have your own way of doing it already. But seriously, we all help each other and we plan to help the incoming class just as we've been helped. I'm on a committee at the school (chair of it) that makes decisions with the president of our class...and we've been talking about how to make the transition for the new D1 class smooth.

Anatomy-will be the hardest class you will take first year (mentally challenging wise). It's a three quarter class in which they mix Histo, Embryo, Gross/Head&Neck, and Neuro around the whole time, which is frustrating to have four different types of material you have to study. To make it even more difficult, you will have three or four different lecturers that test completely opposite of one another the whole time. The main professor will go out of his way to trick you on exams, so make sure you study EVERYTHING...regardless of how irrelevant it may seem. This is pretty daunting when you're looking at 25-30 lectures, each of which have about 60 powerpoint slides of info you have to know so good well.

Physio-my favorite class, our professor is awesome. He sends out review sheets before the exams of things to focus on. They're pretty dependable, and if you're happy making a B...just know everything on them. The problem with this class is they've hired an adjunct med school professor that teaches residents at the LLUSM and doesn't understand that a dentist doesn't need to know renal physiology like a Nephrologist does lol. Seriously, you will be amazed how deep and detailed this guys lectures get. I've never made a C in a science class in my life, I was VERY happy with a 79.5 on my midterm. We had at least half of the class that scored this way. I walked out of our midterm feeling like I made a 30 at best.

Summary-it's a fun place to be, and if you really love dentistry, the bull you put up with is worth it. You will never feel so overwhelmed, even during orientation week, you may laugh but I'm serious. Again, I have it kind of easy because I don't need to make straight A's to specialize, but like making at least B's. A "B" in dental school is a very hard grade to get as well, so don't laugh at B's. The difference between an A and B in dental school is literally hundreds more hours/quarter studying...and I have a family so it makes it hard for me to do, so I got lucky that I've always wanted to to general dentistry. We do indeed have people in our class that do it though, one of which is my gross lab partner who has a newborn. I don't see how he does it, but I must say he makes excellent grades. He must have one heck of a wife 🙂 One thing I can tell you, our school is second to none in clinical preparation. They put us through it in the labs, so if you enjoy that...you will love it here. Good luck to everyone applying/accepted, we can't wait to meet you guys!!! You will love it here!

Sorry this was so long, a lot of it is just me ranting on and on.

You're very welcome...if you guys ever need any help with anything specific, you're always welcome to PM me as well. We have finals coming up next week, so it will be crazy this week, but I promise to get back ASAP! Best of luck to everyone!

I wonder what's going on...

what is life like there for a non-SDA? I heard the caf is all vegetarian food? Are there still people going out on the weekends, or are ppl pretty strict to the no drinking clause?

Ha, well it's sort of odd, because they have tons of soda machines on campus...I had always heard they didn't consume caffeine. The no meat part is very correct though, during orientation week the dental school alumni fed us lunch one day and it was all fake meat (yuck). No one cares if you eat meat though, if you want to bring your lunch...I mean, it's not against the LLU law for people to eat what they wish lol. Yes, the caf is strictly vegetarian.

About people going out on the weekends, I'm actually not too sure. I'm married, so I tend to spend any free time (which is slim to none) with my wife/kids. I heard someone talking the other day about alumni/faculty going out to restaurants and seeing kids (dental students) drinking and reporting them. I'm sure no one cares too much if you can have a drink like a grown-up or have a few beers/cookout at your house. The point is, we are all professionals so we should act accordingly. It's not too cool to see the doctor you're letting poke you with a needle/drill in your mouth at the bar swigging down long island iced teas and wobbling around the bar. So, basically if you just have to drink, try to do so on your own..or with a few friends over at your house. Be extra careful who you chose to drink around though, obviously. Just use common sense, pretty much everyone is cool and laid back.

Got a rejection email the other day. Interviewed in November and thought it went well. Oh well I got in else where. Good luck to everyone that is still waiting to hear.

My status changed from "invited for interview" to "received/application complete". I don't know what to take from this.

Hey all, I've been exhausting myself on the acceptance thread and just found this one. I interviewed on 9/27. It was my first interview and I have heard from 2 other schools. I'm super anxious to hear from LLU as it was my favorite interview. I just noticed last night that LLU was added to my AADSAS portal and indicates that my file is under review with a decision date of 12/5. Anyone have any insight on this. Good or bad? I have a big deposit due by January so I'm hoping to hear soon so I can make a decision. Good luck to everyone!

My AADSAS was the same way and then I got a rejection email but it may or may not be universal. So take it for what it's worth. Good luck.

If I were you, I would call Ms. Cindy in the admissions office about three days (week days) before you're required to make your deposit. Tell her your situation, and ask her if she can tell you anything so you will not have to pay some stupid high deposit up when you're not going to need to, should you be accepted at LLU. She is super sweet and helpful, but I would call her for sure. Hope this helps. Good luck to you, and we hope to see you soon!

What's taking so long??? :'(

Me too! I guess we'll hear in January then??

the committee meets most fridays. it is unlikely that they will meet again before the new year.

Bummer! I have a pretty substantial deposit due the first week of January. I'm trying to be patient but I interviewed almost 3 months ago. I hope that is not a bad sign. I've called Cindy and she said my file was going to be reviewed soon so I should hear something in the near future, pretty vague. Oh well, I hope we get a nice little New Years gift! Apparently classes resume January 2nd or 3rd so hopefully the adcom will be back in the office that week! :xf:

Yes, classes resume starting Jan. 3rd. That's very unfortunate that you have to throw that much money out the window. I still think your chances are wonderful if you interviewed that early. Most of the people (not all, but most) who interview early end up being accepted. Did you have late DAT scores or something? Anything that may have held your file up?

ugh why cant this winter break be longer I don't wanna go back to school yet =(

Today my status has changed from "Received/Under review" to "Received/Application Complete" with a decision date of 12/19/2011, even though my interview was in September... I don't know, what that means... Any updates on somebody else's statuses?... or any new acceptances which I don't know about yet? 🙂

Hey there! My status is still "Received/Under Review" with a decision date of 12/5/11. I also interviewed back in September. I wish I had more info for you! Here's hoping to our acceptances coming soon!

Same here, my status is still "received/under review" with a decision date of 12/5/11, and I interviewed in October.

Does anyone know how many interviews vs. how many people get accepted there after an interview. I interviewed, loved the school and am anxiously waiting to hear back

Cindy told me they interview between 375-425 applicants for a class size of about 100. I'm not sure how many they accept though! My guess would be somewhere around 125-130??

Hey, Guys! What's going on with Loma Linda? Any ideas how full the Loma Linda class is?

425 interviews? Mother of god! I would hate to be faculty there

Ya my AADSAS got updated to offer made last Friday! But don't worry, it seems like they review applications in small batches on Fridays, so hopefully you will hear soon!
